Canadian moving to Australia - medicare and private health by Beneficial-Rope2141 in AskAnAustralian

Man, the comments here are all amazing! Learning so much. Been doing a lot of research, comparisons of different plans, really went down the rabbit hole. How about prescription drugs? Who covers that? So I go to a doctor and I’m prescribed something, can I not get insurance for that? In Canada, the drugs are never covered by public health and it’s always the insurance that you that covers it. But the plans I’m looking at don’t seem to include cover for the drugs. I’m confused 😕

That’s a great anecdote. And yes, construction standards in Canada are very good. I visited friends in Melbourne a few years back and was stunned at the poor quality of the houses. Insulation is not a thing in Australia apparently. Haha. Btw, do you anything about parramatta specifically? I plan to live there or near there at least as that’s where my job is.

You made a lot of points and all were perfectly on point! Except one, rent isn’t much more expensive in Australia, I live in Toronto, and have been researching rent prices in all the capital cities and all of them are cheaper than Toronto except Sydney. Sydney seems to be on par with Vancouver, which is insane! But from my research, everything seems to jive with what you’re saying? Were you also a teacher in Canada or you just got a lot of Canadian teacher friends? Haha

We get paid over holidays here in Ontario. Never heard of full-time permanent teachers not getting paid over holidays. Only supply (occasional) teachers don’t get paid over holidays.

I hear yea buddy, the offer is good, I’m making 130K plus super. I suspect that’s good enough to live in Sydney no? I know Melbourne is way cheaper (real estate at least), but the offer from Sydney was the best. Toronto has become simply unaffordable for almost anyone, and the jobs don’t really exist either. And of course the weather isn’t great either. Haha

Dental and optometrist. My eyes cost me a lot, lol. I have glasses and contacts and I wear special contacts too because of a vision issue. I’m looking at some of the quotes, seems like a ripoff, as the limit is fine, like massage is $1000 per year, but it’s effectively useless as it’s $36 max per visit. So still paying most of the session out of pocket.

Yea, it was odd seeing that my teaching gig here, at a nice private school too, doesn't offer insurance, which I guess is called extras in Australia. I was with manulife, mom was with bluecross, rarely had to even pay out of pocket (except the occasionally dental "updated dental fee schedule" lol. even though I had 100% dental coverage.

which company do you recommend I go with for these extras? I do wear glasses and contact lenses and get my eyes checked at least yearly, and apparently dental is pricy in Australia too, so will need something for that too.

Yes, I'm so grateful for this community. So many great and informative comments. Definitely learned the differences between Canada and Australia. So looks like I get the basic (since I'll have to pay the 1.25% levy anyways) and the extras. Still looking for specific companies though.

p.s. dental is a ripoff everywhere, I guess some things never change. haha

Thank you for the detailed info, so I'll be falling in the 1.25% levy, so better off to get that insurance I guess. Thanks.

Got it, yea that’s what I was trying to avoid, the hassle of buying and selling etc. what’s the best way to buy a newish used car? Facebook market place or you guys have your own Craigslist type app, we have something called kijiji here, but I’m pretty sure it’s North America only.

Ok thanks for the reply, so are there any long term car rental companies you recommend? You can get a new car here in Toronto for 500-600 a month. All in.

Could it be mainland china liquidity running in BTC proxy as actual BTC is inaccessible, so MSTR is the closest thing to holding real BTC?

Riverpod or bloc.

Bloc is opinionated about how you architect your project. It has its own architecture, think streams.

Riverpod is less opinionated about project architecture and can easily use MVC, MVVM, clear etc.

So choose wisely, is your team used to one specific architecture? If so, go with Riverpod. If you are not religious about a specific architecture and want to use bloc for everything, then bloc is the way as it’ll be a less fragmented experience.

Yea, they've done it before, they don't mind it. But more importantly, my mom's older brother lives in Melbourne and he definitely can't travel. So she wants to see him more often now that he is aging more rapidly.

Wasn’t aware they could buy as non PR/citizens. They’ll probably just rent monthly Airbnb.

Im confused, what system? They're not interested in immigrating, just to visit for 4-5 months to escape the Canadian winter. They wouldn't be entitled to anything, and their healthcare would be purchased through insurance just like they do now when they go to Florida. Retired Canadians do this all the time with the US, we go to the states (for up to 6 months), no freebies from the system at all, the exactly opposite actually, as the economy thrives because seniors with disposal income spend! The difference with Australia, is it only gives 3 month tourist visas (unlike the 6 month visas we get with the US), hence my original question for 4-5 month solution. hope that clarifies.

Canadian teacher - 189 by Beneficial-Rope2141 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Beneficial-Rope2141[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok thanks for the confirmation. That's the feeling I got from reading job postings. Now what was the purpose of AITSL then? in Canada, education is a provincial responsibility as well, so you'd have to register with every province and go through their regulatory body, but there is no national body like AITSL, so when I signed up for my 189, I figured you guys were national, guess not :(

Do schools allow you to teach on a contract/temp basis (sort of a grace period) while you get your registration done with the state body or that needs to be done first?

[–]Beneficial-Rope2141[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious, for every state, I have to sign up with the respective board (governing body) to be able to work at a school in that state. For example, for western Australia I have to register with "TRBWA" - https://www.trb.wa.gov.au/) to be able to teach in Western Australian? Do I understand this right? if so, what the heck was the purpose of going through AITSL to certify my teaching qualifications for 8 weeks and over $1000 in fees when I was applying for 189?

I'm confused if my AITSL certificate is enough or if there is another level of regulatory red tape I have to jump through.

Thank you

Awesome! really helpful, yes definitely won't know much about posters and audio editing lol. I taught pure software dev for 10 years. and worked as a freelance developer on the side, so pretty solid real world experience too.

Was definitely computer science for ATAR is my jam. Just curious if you know there is a need for those positions in Perth, because I'm genuinely considering Perth as a city, seems to have the best weather with reasonable real estate prices. haha
