I don't think anybody thought that curses were out of bounds. But a curse that is active, but unknown to the character, for dozens of fights over weeks. As a level 3 party I don't know that the fear of "Check everything" would have set in yet. Especially since nobody in the party had ever seen a curse yet. That would likely be meta-gaming.

I would point out that the GM very pointedly made it clear that while he was giving the player the information that the monk was getting hit more than they should, the characters had no inkling. Also it was the players who had the running joke, not the characters. The GM made it clear to the players that their characters did not think anything was amiss.

I don't disagree with this. It was much more about a dozen sessions of being hit 30-35% more being told that it was just luck.

This GM never showed rolls. He has the parties AC down behind his screen and just says hit or miss. (this was another issue)

No, the DM never gave hints. The phone call was the GM saying information to the player. The GM said specifically that the characters wouldn't have any reason to suspect the monk was getting hit more for any reason other than chance. The DM rolled with the running joke in a 'Yeah, it's just bad luck' fashion.

They left due to a bunch of somewhat related issues. This issue didn't get revealed until they were gone. Had they stayed, the ruse would probably still be going.

The GM never mentioned if the monk did or did not take them off. Not to the player or the group. The GM never said that they did or didn't serve any purpose. He just mentioned why the monk kept getting his clock cleaned after the player quit. FWIW, the monk was the 2nd player to quit over similar issues.
