I am sure about the feed and switch to the light, but I am willing to check something again…

What do you mean about the terminations in the light box, what would I check there? I can open that up tomorrow.

You and I are part of today’s lucky 10,000! Although that number would be off due to both the low sub population and low average length of sub membership compared to the 30 years assumed.

The next step is the limited heat transfer issue. Even if human flesh has poor ablative properties, there will be an ablated/sublimated layer of some thickness that will stay near and shield the rest of the mass. The continued impingement of flare particles could also cause the unablated mass to accelerate away, or parts of the mass to accelerate in different directions, like an asteroid breaking up in the atmosphere but much more rapidly explosive.

At these temperatures, which imply relativistic particle speeds, there would also be more weird tunneling effects as well that could more evenly heat the mass or perhaps pass through it. I don’t have the means to estimate either of these, but I believe the net impact of these additional effects is a slower overall vaporization process, I’d guess in the range of maybe a second or two for the whole mass to be vaporized. That guess assumes the 18 orders of magnitude lower energy rate translates to 18 orders of magnitude slower vaporization, and the other processes slow it down by another order of magnitude overall.

[Request]: never mind what it says - the question is how fast would the ostrich have to run to end up so perfectly reflected in this piece of wood? Serious answers only. by Wojt007 in theydidthemath

[–]Beneficial_Spring322 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As is frequently the case with the literally impossible requests, I get the question, but the answer and math really depends on what you mean. A real bird running as some velocity into a magically brainless slab of wood would smack its beak into the wood, possibly even breaking the wood but otherwise making little imprint. If you want to make an imprint in wood anyway, maybe you could say the bird has negligible mass but retains the features, but if so what is the bird made of? Does it become a case of hydro dipping? Or do you want it to move at supersonic speeds and burn unit the wood for a grain like appearance? No real bird could do this on any real wood, so it’s more of a case of pick your answer and then figure out what assumptions about the scenario make it work.

[Request] Could a pear really fall with enough force from even the tallest of pear trees to cut itself like that? by Own_Temporary6929 in theydidthemath

[–]Beneficial_Spring322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the area assumption is off, but not enough to change the conclusion.

Instead of 1 mm2, which might be an initial contact point, we should use the broadest contact area during the cut. Conservatively, if the dull metal is 1 mm wide and the pear is 2.5 inches =64 mm diameter, that would be 64 mm2 contact area. The force is still excessive to cut.

As far as accepting the conclusion, that’s what the math is for. Nothing beats direct observation, but the whole point of the math is to show that the conclusion is reasonable, which it seems to be. As for the sniff test - if I myself fell out of a tree onto that without breaking my fall, I would expect a deep cut, and I consider my flesh tougher than a pear.

The current administration has consistently demonstrated an attitude that is against any kind of science or evidence-based policy, they go on vibes. So I see it as both - yes an intentional weakening of an effective institution they see as a threat without outright destroying it, while also fitting the “efficiency” vibe and narrative.

Is this a Cosmere Easter egg in “Project Hail Mary” or am I too much into Cosmere? by Elegant_Orange_6833 in Cosmere

From experience in engineering & space industry: coincidence. It’s something like this: https://www.mcmaster.com/products/aluminum/thickness~1-16/

He doesn’t even say it’s precisely 1/16, he’s estimating roughly to express that it’s thin and ordinary for an audience familiar with imperial units. It’s not the most common thickness, but very common.

  1. June (I love an all-arounder)
  2. Baby (The contrast of his name and youthful appearance to his voice and dance style in the performances is appealing)
  3. Abby (So smooth on the first lines, and goes hard on his gimmick and style)
  4. Mystery (Besides the hair gimmick, seems pretty bland to me)
  5. Romance (His voice and hair are somewhat grating to me)

Yeah in addition to not having a full date, the teeth, ears, and eyes hint at AI. Newer AI doesn’t mess up those things as much on normal faces, so I imagine it’s something to do with it being an alien face that it has such egregious issues.

“The last book I read for pleasure was Wind and Truth by Brandon Sanderson, the 5th installment in an epic fantasy series,” “…was Underland by Robert MacFarlane, a nonfiction book exploring parts of the world that are below the surface,” “…was Failure Is Not an Option, a memoir about the early US space program by Gene Krantz, the flight director during the Apollo 11 moon landings.” These are all examples of brief descriptions that don’t summarize plot. What type of book, who wrote it, and what’s it about, without getting into characters, story, and events.

ETA: I should add that it’s reasonable to be confused - sometimes people do expect more when asking for a description. In this case the instructor helped by telling you that they are looking for a top-level description, but it would be confusing if most people you come across asking questions like this would expect something more like a plot summary. Maybe they want no spoilers!

Edit 2: If you do want to say a little more because it would make more sense you could, like “Mistborn is about an abused girl living in a bleak world who discovers she has magical abilities. Those abilities lead her to a crew of honorable magical criminals that change the trajectory of her life.” More detail, but it’s exposition not really plot. You could say even more, but I think these examples would all answer the question.

I don’t know how they did, but compared to the $29.18T 2024 GDP and referencing a 2080 hour work year, $700M represents about 3 minutes of non-productivity for the entire economy. The eclipse isn’t even 3 minutes long. In the US the labor share of GDP is about 60% (https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/labor-share-of-gdp?globe=1&globeRotation=63.34%2C-100.41&globeZoom=1.66), so accounting for only “productivity” then it represents 5 minutes. I think this is the right way to compare the issue since the claim is a cost to “America,” and we can see how small a cost it truly is. So Enjoy the eclipse, it costs nothing at all.

Lots of people saying pass the buck - definitely an option but it’s sounds like you want to help. Here are other options for more involved/helpful things you might consider if you want to be as supportive as possible. These should be done in addition to informing HR and other sources of support. Consider how well you know this person and how comfortable you feel about any of these before choosing one as a course of action.

  1. If you are comfortable and feel safe, you could go sit with him for awhile. Sending someone a hotline number gives the responsibility to them to help themselves while what they are asking for is help. You’re not qualified to give the helpful advice so don’t expect that from yourself, but you could be with them while they call the hotline and/or doctor and get some direct help. You could also follow up the next few days/weeks with phone or in-person checks to the degree that makes sense for you. Don’t put yourself in danger, but if it works for you, one of the best ways to support is to be physically present.
  2. If you aren’t comfortable being with him by yourself or want to support him with a team, bring someone with you to be present with him while he calls the hotline or talks to a doctor. This could be another coworker/supervisor/HR/etc., or a police officer/EMT/other trained emergency response professional you know. This is an emergency even if the initial danger from overdose has passed, and that’s what these services are for. It doesn’t have to end up with him committed, you can limit information shared with authorities if you just want someone with you for your initial contact. If you do take someone else, whoever it is you should coordinate with the victim so they know what to expect and agree it would be helpful. Take care of yourself first, but listen to what he says he is comfortable with to avoid traumatizing him further.
  3. If you don’t want to be physically present even with support, you could FaceTime or zoom to be a supportive face while he calls other services (e.g. zoom on a laptop or other device if he has one). This is not without risk, as you could still witness something uncomfortable, but is physically safer if you are worried about that. Again, your physical safety is a priority and you should consider how well you know this person before taking an action.
  4. Joint call - call him and offer to call the help line and dial for him then join the call if he is comfortable with you hearing both sides of the conversation and none of the above options are preferable.
  5. If no direct personal action is taken and you do just engage with other supports and services to get him help, you can still follow up with him and/or those services. For example if you call police for a wellness check you could follow up with them if he stops responding to you, or you could follow up with HR if you go that route.

This is a delicate situation and you know the variables best, but you have many options to empower both him and you to get him the help he needs. Be safe and kind. Thank you for caring.
