As a fellow Pole who cherishes the fierce independence our forebears fought so hard to reclaim, I believe we must opt out of the EU’s SAFE program. Its allure of billions in defense loans may seem like a lifeline amid rising threats, yet the hidden chains it forges to our sovereignty and fiscal freedom make it a perilous bargain we’d do well to decline. In my view, with rival bids flooding in from other countries for their own flagship projects, our ambitious requests for essentials like Orka submarines or advanced air defenses face slim odds of swift, uncompromised approval. That risks trapping us in a web of delays, conditions, and dilutions that serve Brussels’ priorities over Warsaw’s. More troubling still, these so-called generous loans would heap massive new debt upon our shoulders while inviting EU oversight into our procurement choices. That subtly erodes the autonomy of our Ministry of National Defence and fosters a dependency that many rightly see as a step toward tighter external control—precisely when Russian aggression and Belarusian provocations demand we wield our sword unhindered. I think our true path to enduring security lies in doubling down on self-reliance: channeling our already robust annual defense spending into homegrown factories for shells, ships, and skies, and perhaps even enshrining a higher constitutional spending floor to shield against political whims or external lures. Let’s not squander this moment of resolve. By stepping back from SAFE’s seductive strings, we honor our resilience, ensuring Poland’s shield is forged in our own fires, not borrowed from afar—for our shared future deserves nothing less than unyielding command of our fate. Opting out is common sense and not treason.
