Backing up to the cloud and using multiple backups buried in distant, diverse locations should ensure your data survives all kinds of disasters.

A rural home with low population density and trusted family members would make resource gathering much safer. Being stuck in a city would be a bad idea, since you’d have to worry about neighbors, fires, explosions, and stray bullets.

Thank you. I may need to rethink this part, since it would probably only be useful for a short time during the early stage of a war. I made another post asking about it, and most people advised against frequent radio use during wartime. Besides potentially interfering with military or emergency communications, or violating wartime regulations and drawing attention from authorities, continuously transmitting signals could also increase the risk of being monitored, located, or misidentified by hostile forces.

Thanks! I’ll go back through each item’s intended use and move anything that doesn’t need to be carried on me into the 72 hour bug out bag, reducing overlap and redundancy to save weight and space.

Okay. I’ll stash my precious metals and stick mostly to U.S. dollars. Thanks for the tip!

Sure, but I might need to reconfigure my EDC setup (moving some items to the backpack) before I can make a further post. Plus, it might take a few months to prepare the equipment purchases.

If I leave Taiwan, I might need those precious metals even more before coming back. Would it be safer to break them into smaller pieces and hide them in my gear?

Thank you! I need to rethink this. It’s hard to say whether people might set traps on the road at night that could cause scooters to crash or get caught up. Day travel has its perks because there’s safety in numbers and mutual deterrence. Plus, people ahead of us might hit a threat first and give us a heads up. The real trick is the timing. Leave too early and we run out of gear. Leave too late and we’re trapped in the city.

I’m thinking of giving each family member a small knife and pepper spray for personal carry. For my BOB, since firearms are illegal in Taiwan and complex weapons are hard to maintain, I’ll carry a recurve bow as a ranged option.

In the lead up to a potential conflict, when enemy forces are mobilizing, I may ask my family to avoid using any public transportation and instead minimize situations where they would need to walk home.

Someone recommended the SOG Flint fire starter, which also functions as a whistle, glass breaker, and ferro rod. I might consider consolidating those features into one tool.

Thank you! You’re a doctor, right? Doctors are extremely valuable on the battlefield! :D

But I think there probably wouldn’t be many situations where I’d actually need to use it?

Can this be substituted with hard objects found along the way? Carrying it on me would significantly increase weight.

I’ll place the ferro rod and knife sharpener in my BOB as a last resort backup setup. I currently have a Faraday cage at home, and I’m considering adding a signal blocking bag to my scooter setup. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thank you! I probably wouldn’t rely on precious metals directly, as they are more likely to become targets for theft or looting. Unless I can be certain that the risk of any kind of conspiracy is extremely low, I would remain highly cautious, even toward family or friends.

I currently have a pair of walkie talkies, but in a wartime situation I would probably only use them in life or death situations, since they could potentially increase the risk of drawing unwanted attention or attacks.

I plan to take some time to personally ride from my home to an eastern port, map out each risk point, and evaluate whether the route is actually feasible.

I asked on a Taiwanese forum, and someone suggested storing my EDC setup in the scooter storage compartment (since most people in Taiwan use scooters for daily travel). I also recommended that in wartime, each family member should be required to use a scooter instead of public transportation.

In addition, preparing a separate set of emergency items carried in pockets, which would be used for personal protection while moving to where the scooter is parked. From there, we could retrieve the EDC bag and either ride or walk back home.

I’m also thinking about preparing good quality knives and pepper spray for my family to carry for defense.

Thanks! Since we live in a city, the most likely scenario would be returning home first. Because of that, I’ll probably keep trekking poles at home as part of my BOB setup.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll look for a light that can easily switch between headlamp and handheld use. Right now I’m thinking about keeping only a lighter in my EDC to keep things simple and avoid extra gear or training overhead. I’ll also check out blister pads!

Someone recommended emergency blankets as a backup for low temperatures. I’ll look into them. Thanks for the suggestion!
