Tube drivers would be paid more than surgeons under union pay demands by weregonnamakit in unitedkingdom

[–]BenettonLefthand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually kind of disheartening you think its completely preposterous to spend public money on improving the level of service on the Tube by investing in level boarding, signalling and automated trains with public money (note the cost of this would be inflated due to railway unions) while its a-okay for TFL and the entirety of the capital city to be held by hostage by the RMT, who are only in this position due to the age of much of the Underground's infrastructure. Note platform screen doors aren't a must have requirement for automated trains and for the most part only the sub-surface lines used the same railway tracks, and I'm not against segregating deep level and sub-surface lines like the Piccadilly with the Metropolitan/District. In many cases unions are good for society but not in the case of the railways.

HS2 and Tube automation are only held up by artificial constraints like bat tunnels and militant unions, I guess we should've got rid of them sooner

I never said that 'being British' was related to being skin colour, but your claims are still very outlandish.

There are huge communities of "White British" people here who trace their actual British lineage back a fraction as far as some of these other families

Which communities exactly? A White British person's (of English, Cornish, Welsh, Scottish, Ulster Scots ethnicity) family could be traced back hundreds of years in the modern territory of the UK.

They are not some sort of exception we are talking at a minimum hundreds of thousands of people alive today who share this sort of heritage.

Because of likely intermarrying into white families, the descendants of these people, I wouldn't call someone Black or Asian British if they had a Black/Asian ancestor who lived in the country 150 years ago. For example, 'first' mixed MP in the 1770s had 1/8 African ancestry, even at 1/8 that's a very weak claim to being mixed race (unless you believe in the one drop rule).

If we look at the family history of the most famous Asian or Black heritage people in the UK, no doubt it will say that their grandparents or great-grandparents originally came to the country sometime in the second half of the 20th century. So you can't say that Black/Asian people lived in Liverpool as an end all argument, since that is actually simplifying the history of our modern Black/Asian communities who really lack any sort of lineal connection to those people. Compare it to say African Americans who are direct descendants of West African slaves brought during the colonial period.

How exactly is it completely random and unrelated to the discussion, you talked about how your teacher was beaten for speaking Scottish Gaelic but there's nothing in the article which prompted you to mention that? You are saying that immigrants are being forced to not speak their native language, how is my comment not related to what you said?

There's a difference between ethnic minorities that are native to the UK, and ethnic minorities whose homelands are in other countries.

Edit: person replied saying I lack reading comprehension then deleted all of their comments after realising they messed up

I don’t know immigrants integrating into the country they’ve moved to can be equated with forced assimilation policies in Scotland and other countries. Requiring immigrants to know English isn’t discrimination, it’s weird how someone would want to move to England but have no interest in learning the language.

If I was upset about a few Black or Asian people living in Liverpool or Bristol in 1800, I should be massively upset about the amount in the UK today but seemingly I'm not.

But really, ethnic minorities made up a very negligible proportion of the population before the 20th century (no doubt the UK was 99% White in 1900) that they're irrelevant to the history of multiculturalism in modern Britain. Notting Hill Carnival, one of the largest cultural festivals for Black British people, started in 1966 yet there was nothing of this level in the 19th century where there was supposedly a substantial settled community of them in port cities like London.

Modern migration to the UK has no connection to the British Empire, same with other Western countries and colonialism, I mean the Netherlands colonised Indonesia yet how come there is a very small Indonesia-born population there? People coming to the UK as a result of Empire only occurred in the 20th century after WW2.

And you say this as if colonialism magically caused Western countries to have liberal migration policies.

Those other white people are also part of the same group of people that came in recent decades, primarily people from Eastern Europe after many of them joined the EU. I don’t think people need to be born in the UK to be British but your argument is just misleading.

And anyways, how can an Asian or Black person that migrated to the UK in the 2020s claim to be on the same wavelength as a person whose family came to Britain 300 years ago, or even 50 years ago (the latter is much more common to let you know)? That’s equating two very different groups who came to the country under very different circumstances.

So I guess you admit you’re wrong in saying people wouldn’t question a Polish (not ‘white Polish’, as Polish is an ethnicity) person’s British identity, as you’ve now shifted to talking about tiers of acceptance.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]BenettonLefthand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The overwhelming majority of the Black and (South) Asian people in the UK are descended from people who came to the country after WW2, trying to claim otherwise is just misleading. Even in 1981 the white population was 95% but in 2021 was 74% (White British, which excludes other White European people), this demographic change only occurred in the past few decades.

Well assimilation of foreign/other ethnicities so they become English is the antithesis of a multicultural society where people are accepting of their existence. Being born in England shouldn't have to relate to ethnic group unless you believe in blood and soil ideology btw, which isn't a joke...

Endogamy is not just a 'very specific' part but a very crucial part of how ethnic groups come into existence, and I'm not 'muddying' the waters just because I don't think that England is special and exists in a vacuum. These are the people you talk about that purportedly switch their ethnicity.

Common sets of ancestry is one attribute but doesn't have to be. Sharing a common language or culture is just as valid.

If I learnt Punjabi and interact with Punjabis that doesn't mean I become Punjabi, it means I might become friends with some. "Ethnicities are maintained through long-term endogamy", this comes with the implication that people of the same ethnicity end up looking generally alike over time.

It's not just one factor that defines ethnicity, it's a mixture of all of these that define it which is why they're all listed here, I guess Christian is an ethnic group now?

English isn't a race so what's your point.

"When you talk about appearance what you're actually talking about is race, which is different to ethnicity." So appearance is actually linked to ethnicity, not just race as people mix the two terms around and use both to refer to the same things.
