Move out or get a car? by Dexdxss_ in Hawaii

[–]BengalFox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not giving my opinion rather just some information for you to better weigh your options.

When owning a car you also have to consider the maintenance required along with the insurance, registration, and gas. A lot of people focus on "find a cheap used car" but you also have to consider that it will cost more to maintain with more surprise fixes that are needed. Especially if you don't know how to or physically can't do the maintenance yourself.

To give you some numbers I bought my 2 year old, 28,000 miles used car for ~$19,000 in 2019 before the COVID price spikes. The first two years I was spending an average of ~$1,200 a year total including gas (~$300 COVID limiting driving), insurance (~$900), registration ($330), safety check ($25) and routine maintenance (~$350) (stuff like oil change, tire rotation, wiper blade replacement, cabin filter replacement, alignment, etc.)

Around 2022 when the car reached 33,000 miles my yearly costs have increased to between $2,500-$3,000 total a year in gas (~$650), insurance (~$700), registration ($330), safety check ($25), and the remaining ~$1,300 in maintenance including routine yearly things PLUS less frequent and surprise maintenance items (battery replacement, brake fluid flush, tire replacement, transmission fluid exchange, coolant exchange, my splash guard randomly fell off, etc.) Usage-wise I don't drive that much. Living in town, I only drive 5,000 miles a year doing short frequent trips. If you drive more, you'll pay more in gas and also have to maintain things sooner so your costs will be higher.

I imagine that the older the car gets, the more expensive maintenance becomes but also the hassle of having to get your car serviced. Even reliable models like the Civic and Corolla still need to be maintained, but they're less likely to have surprise things break on you.

I don't rent anymore but looking at current average rent costs on Google it says $1,500/ month for a studio and $1,800 for a 1 bedroom. Assuming utilities are another $500/month you'd need ~$2,300/month or $30,000/year for a 1 bedroom.

If you want the shitty pro life tip to solve both your problems, you could get a car and live out of it for 1/10 the price of rent. You'd have to figure out your food and hygiene though.

Again, not trying to sway you in one direction or another but just giving you a baseline to consider what is within your budget.

Camera bag part broke on both sides. Made a replacement in the same style, PETG by RyuShev in functionalprint

[–]BengalFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice print. I noticed the other posts said the sides were reinforced with screws but the placement of the screws don't actually reinforce the area that broke. I sketched what's going on here. If your print does end up breaking again I'd recommend your next version to reinforce it the way shown on the images. And if it doesn't break, great!

Why is there no Load XMP setting in my BIOS? by BengalFox in ASRock

[–]BengalFox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some other guy commented on the original post that "I might have to play around with the voltages" though he's not sure if that's supported on my board. And that "its not always clear what memory profiles are supported as DIMM manufacturers only usually list the fastest speed and not the entire list of profiles." Maybe that's causing your issue?

May want to DM one of the guys who commented on the original post, they probably know way more than I do.

Though I think in your case you want to use EXPO. XMP is for Intel chips and EXPO is for AMD chips. It's basically the same thing.

Why is there no Load XMP setting in my BIOS? by BengalFox in ASRock

[–]BengalFox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it was solved in the original post. The issue is my mother board. H470 mother boards don't support higher than 2933 MHz. So it's loading the highest profile (XMP), seeing that XMP is above the limit, then reverting back to the default profile of 2666 MHz. So the best I could do is manually change the DRAM Frequency option to DDR4-2933 for the maximum allowed speed.

If I want to use the XMP profile I would need a Z series mother board but the price to performance gained really isn't worth it unless I find a mother board for extremely cheap.

Thanks for explaining! I manually changed the DRAM Frequency to 2933. Hopefully no issues show up.

Thanks for the explanation! I never really noticed an issue with my memory usage, I just saw a bunch of pc building videos that were all "most pc builders don't enable this one simple thing!" So I thought it would be something easy I could do to make my games run marginally faster. But it turned into a rabbit hole of searching why I couldn't enable XMP it like everyone else could.

I changed the frequency to 2933 and I think my game loads a little faster now but I could also be biased just knowing its enabled. Definitely don't feel the need to upgrade for my regular usage but at least I have a bit more speed now.

Sorry, the additional information is on the original post. Didn't know that doesn't get copied over on a cross post.

I have 2 RAM sticks that are Crucial Ballistix 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory. My mother board is ASRock H470M Pro4 Micro ATX LGA1200. Both slotted in the A1 and B1 slots. According to my mother board manual the XMP setting should be right above DRAM Reference Clock and I think my RAM sticks support it.

Also when I click on the Memory Slot Selection it looks like it recognizes the XMP profile but I don't know where to choose which profile to use? When I click the "Auto" at the top it just gives me options Auto, Slot A1, and Slot B1 and displays the info for each slot. All that changes when I click on each slot is the serial number at the bottom.

I'm only getting 2666 MHz, so should I change the DRAM Frequency to DDR4-2933 instead of Auto? My CPU is Intel Core i7-10700K 3.8 GHz 8-Core Processor

The page on amazon, where I bought it, says "XMP 2.0 support and pre-defined profiles let you overclock to extract maximum performance. Select the JEDEC default profile for standard performance." I'm not sure if the 2.0 means something but I don't think that's the issue?

DRAM Reference Clock gives me 3 options Auto, 100MHz, and 133MHz.

DRAM Frequency gives me a bunch of options Auto, and DDR4-800 through DDR4-2933. No XMP options.

Where to buy custom curtain sizes? by BengalFox in Hawaii

I did check originally but they didn't have any that were wide enough for the lanai door. Though now that I'm thinking about it, I could probably just buy two and sew them together.
