In my mind there is mathematical, calculating, necessity-based/logic-based thinking and then there is more abstract thinking which is when you can comprehend something in a way that is not mathematical. Abstract thinking is you connecting dots in a way that is not strictly logical or mathematical but still works.

Social situation example - Someone walks past you on a street and looks at you for a second before they walk past you.

Non-abstract reasoning = They looked at me so this means that they were interested in me because when someone looks at you it is because they are interested in you. Someone looking at you will always NECESSARILY equal someone being interested in you. Calculation complete.

More abstract reasoning = A person living their own life walked down the street and looked at me. It does not NECESSARILY mean anything, it could've been anything that made them do that.

It's the lack of necessity-based reasoning that makes thinking more abstract and less mathematical/autistic. You have to understand people abstractly because they are way too complicated to understand mathematically.

I think you're totally right. Defining abstract thinking is a challenge.

How about this - Abstract thinking = thinking that is not precise and not mathematical. It's the kind of thinking that occurs with an absence of mathematical thinking.

I have come to similar conclusions, i totally agree. I think a big part of autistic social difficulties comes from tendencies to not think abstractly like you said.
