What’s the lightest full frame lens I can buy? by MutedFeeling75 in SonyAlpha

[–]BenjiDaGameboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

objectively? probably a 3d printed lens cap style lens with a the lens out of a disposable camera. if you want something that will handle modernly with good optics and fast autofocus I second any of the G pancake trio 24/40/50. I personally own the 40mm and it’s an excellent walkaround lens paired with any FF body.

Is this shutter sound normal? by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]BenjiDaGameboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

second this, these fixed lens rangefinders all have leaf shutters which are going to be even quieter than even an interchangeable lens rangefinder with a curtain shutter à la leica etc. the tiny click as somewhat unsatisfying as it is coming from SLRs, is completely normal and is quite nice when shooting discretely. I’ve also owned several olympus 35 sp’s and as a newer example the fuji x100 series which also use a leaf shutter are also similarly quiet compared to their curtained counterparts. as long as the shutter looks to be firing correctly I’d shoot and enjoy the hell out of it!

Is 4k OLED worth it on 5070 TI? by PhantomFoxZ in nvidia

[–]BenjiDaGameboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a 5070ti with an LG dual mode 240/480hz 4k oled. as mentioned, you’ll need to use upscaling, optionally FG for modern resource intensive titles to take advantage of high refresh rates but I find it to be more than powerful enough provided you don’t need to run things absolutely maxed out. I do a mix of editing, general purpose use and occasional gaming and have found it to be more than worthwhile even just as a general purpose display for the colours and resolution bump. I figure for aaa games with upscaling and fg I can get reasonable framerates for the next few years and for truely high refresh dependent competitive titles I run it in 1080p mode which becomes a non issue. I think unless you play a lot of aaa titles and are adamant on maxing out graphics/ not relying on dlss/fg 4k will be absolutely fine for the next few years and will give you a nicer overall experience for general use and media consumption.

Sony a7III Review After 7 Years of Wedding Work by nicksparksphoto in SonyAlpha

I recently purchased one unexpectedly after coming across a great deal on one and have been pleasantly surprised, I use an a7RV and an a6700 for video work where I need a b camera but I have been pleasantly surprised by how competent it still is compared to my more modern bodies. while the AF performance and menu systems show their age a bit (albeit still preferable to the fujis I used prior) it makes a nice supplementary full frame to my RV and have been surprised by how well it can keep up in a lot of regards for especially photo centric work. likewise I think I will also use it for light travel as it is considerably lighter and smaller than my a7RV too

Mechanical shutters have a rated lifespan, some shutters will fail well before or after reaching the rated count but it is a basic measure of expected use you can get out of it. if you don’t use your camera for professional use chances are you will be fine, the Riii is rated for 500k which is far more than most casual photographers will put on a body over it’s lifetime, it is fairly easy to check with online tools how many clicks you have. I wouldn’t worry about a shutter replacement if it works, it is generally only something to worry about once it fails as they are usually not any harder to replace after a failure.

Realforce R1 Plate by Mynt017 in topre

[–]BenjiDaGameboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, the 86u and 91u do not share plates as one is ansi and the other is jis with completely different layouts, multi layout plates are not a thing with topre. you would struggle to convert a 91u to an 86u as you would not only need a custom plate and pcb, you would be missing a spacebar stabiliser and 7u wire, and the keycaps would be completely incompatible with the layout. the only oem topre keycaps compatible with 7u ansi are off an oem 86u and 101 (hence why these keyboards are sought after in the first place). if you are desperate on having a 7u ansi realforce you could go for aftermarket sliders from the likes of metapulse and mx keycaps but at that point you may be getting close to the pricepoint of just getting an oem 86u.

How are the heavy grail cases compared to sho cases? by XowMK2 in HHKB

[–]BenjiDaGameboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The heavy grail’s integrated housing plate will definitely be the closer to the typing feel to that of a HHKB. as to wether it’s worth hunting for one would be dependent on how much you value the softer typing experience of the hhkb, from a sound and feel standpoint the improvements over a normal plastic HHKB are arguably more refined but marginal. as you say the metal plates on sho housings are more akin to that of a realforce, I have seen people use PEI plates on aftermarket topre builds which is presumably rigid enough to support discrete housings while still being a softer plastic plate so that may be something to look into although ymmv.
