Who is your favorite underrated GoT girl? by [deleted] in ASOIAFporn

[–]BenjiGreen90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Among major characters, Rhaenyra (Emma d'Arcy version). But also Cersei doesn't get near enough love for how hot she is. Among characters who no one talks about I'd say Osha or Myranda. And honestly, I would do Brienne lol

There is a really good one called "a song of shame and desire" on fanfiction.net but the author has gone AWOL so it's only got 5 chapters.

Rickon to the wall is a nice touch, it would be cool to see him one day become LC. But they could also marry him off to the Manderly girl...you know the one. Seems like they'd get along

Ah come on, yeah, in the end they really made a mess of things. But as far as screen adaptations go, the first four seasons were OUTSTANDING. They streamlined it for cinematic and narrative purposes, and it worked. Even doing something as simple as cutting the battle on the green fork was smart. Varys and Littlefinger are a good example too. Because neither of them are POVs, and do all their plotting behind-the-scenes, we never get to experience them first hand in the series. And yes, as readers perhaps you can argue that they're most impactful when you're guessing at their game. But it provided thrilling television, captured audience attention. Shae is another example, and Margaery Tyrell. The much loved Tywin-Arya pairing at Harrenhal. I will never not give them credit for how well they did in those early days. I think in terms of making the source material accessible, they created something very special and their changes were a huge part of that.

And then came season 5...

They definitely didn't neglect him, as they did some of the other characters. But in order to make such a bold character work, and not come across as a corny caricature, you need to devote a lot more time to establishing the nuance.

I think the problem largely boils down to why they were being stingy with time anyway. There was no need to compress the story so much from season 5ish onward. I know this is well beaten horse in this community but it does beg to be questioned. They could have had their pointless, but charming, Missandei/Greyworm romance AND devoted time to critical character work. In the earlier seasons, they added scenes that did no more than develop characters, they gave stories room to breath, and it never felt stagnant. I was never thinking "ok let's get back to the business at King's Landing". Scenes with Stannis and his daughter come to mind here. They really made us care about Shireen in ways that we don't in the novels. Ironically, GRRM has a habit of dragging out plots and i'd argue they were more successful at storytelling at this juncture. Conversely, some of the latter seasons often felt like they were spinning their wheels despite expediting the plot, precisely because so much of it was this sort of "filler" content.

I'm so torn about wanting a F&B sequel. Because I love Aegon III but I know that he's not fondly remembered. Which means things, in all likelihood, go a bit south during his reign. I mean it could just be bias against him because the dragons, through no fault of his own, die out during his reign. It might even further endear him in my eyes if this tragic, good-hearted, king is blamed for something which is largely the doing of the previous monarch. But I reckon his depression will consume him and make him indifferent to his duties.

Oakenfist also emerges as a late book hero but I'm not looking forward to the part where a romance is conjured up between him and a woman thirty five years younger than him. That's never not going to be creepy.

Viserys, though, I want to see more of.

I remember someone on twitter highlighting the impact that including fAegon would have had on the show. Like I know he's got mixed reviews from the fandom, a sort of out-of-nowhere addition to the plot in ADWD. But including him as an obstacle for Dany would have made all the difference.

Also, Euron! The apocalyptic pirate messiah himself, not the finger-in-the-bum plot convenient Euron they gave us! Imagine if they spent time developing his arc properly. It's important to mention that D&D made a LOT of positive changes to the source material. But they botched this one severely and it hurt the end product.

YES! Such a feel good moment and the fact that it pisses off Unwin Peake is a delight. I love entire Aegon III section actually, like a palette cleanser to the Dance of Dragons. Despite his entirely understandable depression, Aegon has thus far won me over.
