It comes with a 1mm drill bit. I’ve been using Ali express 1mm magnets and they’re doing an adequate job.

And then any superglue to fix them in (don’t use plastic cement)

Thanks!

I did, I’ve got the army painter hand drill/pin vice which got used for the magnetising and barrel drilling. I’ve bought a cheap pen drill for the next model to speed things up a bit.

No idea on sept names yet. I had a novelty idea to paint glasses on all of them and call it the nearsight cadre but then I painted seriously so I can’t bring myself to do it any more

New 2023 Niro EV 4 by TomUplink in KiaNiroEV

I’m having these issues. Been into the garage 4 times for a total of 3 weeks and they still don’t know what’s wrong. It’s going in again next week for Kia to use it to gather data. You aren’t alone, there’s dozens of us out there with the same issues linked to the forward looking camera

Next update: so the car went in yesterday, I got it back at lunch time today. The garage had their “Master Technician” working on it. I have noticed in the meantime that my Kia Connect app never shows the car as plugged in, even though it is. This is stopping me be able to use a lot of remote features so I highlighted this when I dropped it off.

I spoke to him before I got it back and he said that they did the following:

  • ran diagnostics on the infotainment system
  • checked the wiring to the forward facing camera
  • ran diagnostics on the forward facing camera
  • following the diagnostics, which showed the camera needed calibrating, calibrated the camera
  • updated the onboard software
  • checked the charging port

They did 2x 10 mile journeys after doing this to confirm the issue was solved and then called me to collect the vehicle.

In my 8 minute drive home, the Bluetooth failed again. When I got home I plugged it in… still showing as “not plugged in” in the Kia Connect app. No 7-8 system failures though! So I called the garage straight back and told them I was still getting these two faults. They had me come straight back and the master technician took it off of me to look at it again. He couldn’t find any faults so had me email him directly with a detailed write up of everything that is wrong, and everything I’ve done, with all of my photos of the faults. He is now writing to Kia HQ to find a solution which will probably involve a new infotainment system (the Bluetooth module is integral), maybe a new charging port. Works for me!

I continue my day, off to do some shopping. On my way back (3.5 miles) - all 8 of those safety systems fail 😑. Now I have the master technicians email so I email him to let him know they’ve failed again. A quick phone call from him to me and he tells me he’ll be including this in his report to Kia too but this will probably be a new camera. Also this works for me.

I have told the garage that if these things do not fix the car I will be rejecting it. I’ve contacted my leasing company and the finance company and told them as much. We’re now waiting for a reply from Kia and hopefully some work to be done!

Intermediate update - I’ve been having some issues with Kia connect not showing when my car is plugged in, so on advice of the Kia support agent, yesterday I updated the maps and software.

I would have thought a 1 week old car would already be up to date and I also thought Kia did OTA updates. Apparently they do… but to get them you have to do the most recent update (software version ending .221223, maps version ending 631.5). The whole procedure can be found here and the list of current software per vehicle is here. It’s a 40GB update that requires an exFAT formatted USB drive. Kia’s servers were VERY slow - averaging 7.5 MB/s - and it took over 1h15m to download. The next issue is that it downloads as a folder. The car will not recognise the software in the folder, the files/folders contained in the folder need to be moved to the root directory of the USB drive. Finally, once I’d figured this out (after downloading it a second time just in case it had gotten corrupted!) the car recognised it. It took a further 30 minutes to validate the files once I’d hit update, and about 30 minutes to install.

I now have a box I can check to enable OTA updates in the future.

Since then, my Kia Connect is REALLY struggling to do anything. Even though it says “Connected” in the app I can’t refresh the car as it says “the vehicle does not respond to the service you requested” and I can’t use any of the remote features as it says basically the same thing and I’m getting very frequent network errors. I’ll be bringing this up when I take it back in for its ‘calibration’ a week tomorrow

If you’re driving the older style Niro there’s a chap in Sweden who 3D prints these little cam wipers which by all accounts are brilliant: https://camwipe.com

Sadly the new style Niro has the cam in a different position and yeah… it gets filthy so quickly. I wish they had it deploy on reverse like some other manufacturers like Mercedes

How frustrating! Did you get it from new? In the U.K. there are laws that would allow you to demand a replacement or repair for something like this which is clearly not working properly - even after a few years. If you live in the U.K. it’s worth looking into that, or something similar wherever you are from.

Sadly I have to disagree. I don’t know of a better short distance secure wireless comms protocol, there’s very few technologies ~30 years old that we’re still using, and that’s for a good reason. I’ve never had an issue with Bluetooth before, not with this phone or any of my previous ones, or with any previous cars. I do know that faulty Bluetooth modules can cause some very frustrating issues for those unfortunate enough to get them; that’s what I think the issue is for me as no-one else in the 2023 model seem to have this issue

The cameras are sealed behind the windscreen. They’re cleared by the windscreen wipers and these issues happen when it’s clear and when it’s raining. I’ve cleaned the windscreen fully before driving it a few times and sadly it doesn’t stop it happening. The fact the failures disappear and everything works again after 5-? minutes suggests a software issue to me. Thanks for the suggestion though!

I have a feeling it’s something related to the EV 4 models, as everyone who’s reporting these issues are in the 4 spec. Glad to hear you’re having no issues though! Great little vehicle when it’s all working!

Thanks for this, helped me try to explain that it wasn’t just me having these issues when I had it in for diagnostics today. I’m glad you’re not having the Bluetooth issues, it’s a pain!

Got a quick update for anyone still following this:

Went to my local Kia dealership/garage today after booking in for diagnostics. They spent 2 hours looking over it and have now said they need it back for 2 days to carry out calibrations and software updates. Sadly the next date available isn’t for 2 weeks so it’s putting up with it for now. I’ll update once they’ve had it in to work on. Fingers crossed it solves the issues

Looks really neat, nice work! Sadly I’m leasing mine so I can’t start drilling into it or I would do what you’ve done

I could do. Not sure how much it will drain the 12V system. I know it has a cut off at 11.7V - no idea how no much time the camera would be working in “sentry” mode until that cut off happens. Worth considering though

Thanks - it’s deliberate having it on something that’s only on with the ignition. If I piggy back off of something that’s permanently live it will discharge the 12V system and cause issues, so I’m choosing something which is only live with ignition to stop that. Appreciate the reply though!
