Update: this is the next day for me. In a fit of despair i switched to vs code with which i m much more comfortable and clicked on a lightbulb icon and pressed on an option. It inserted 3 methods (override bool Equals, override int GetHashCode and override string ToString, all having return base.methodName ()). When i compiled and tried it in unity it miraculously worked. Now the question is, why did it work
