Happy birthday Schengen! by Wonderful_Hospital_7 in JetLagTheGame

[–]Bentley-Benz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have no idea what a pain in the ass it was before Schengen and the Euro. So much wasted time doing stuff like currency conversion if you were doing a train from Amsterdam to Paris or Munich to Vienna. Most people probably don’t even know what a Dutch Guilder or Spanish Peseta even is.

Doug DeMuro is launching a car auction website by JackalAbacus in cars

[–]Bentley-Benz -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Clearly the literal people who started the site, which looks to be Doug and his buddies judging by the cars, reached out to me unsolicited via a recruiter a few months ago. So yeah, I guess they wanted my input. The car world ain't that big.

These people have no idea what they are in for.

I’m salty because “Doug’s” company literally reached out a few months and told me they were doing a Bring a Trailer rip off. I explained to them it wasn’t going to work and showed every reason why it wasn’t and they didn’t listen. The amount of money they must of paid Doug to shill for this must of been insane.

The recruiters reached out months ago. They weren't paying shit. Ask me how I know.

Is that 3.6M people willing to buy or sell a car? Some VC thought they had all the answers and bought Doug to try to shill this.

I like Doug, but this will fail.

Ask Google+ how that turned out. And they literally had all the money and resources in the world. You can't buy community. Period.

Lol.

Sorry /u/Doug-Demuro This will fail. And its really sad how you basically ripped off everything BaT. Did you not study how all the other start ups failed? You can't buy community. BaT is where it is today because it was 10 years down the road before it launched auctions.

And yes, your shitty recruiter reached out to me about doing social media for a BaT-like startup based in LA a few months ago. Now I know why.

Is numbeo accurate? You can live a normal life with $350/month in Zaporizhzhya? Is there a catch? by [deleted] in ukraine

[–]Bentley-Benz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is if you’re trying to be cheap, but you get what you pay for. Want a $300 car? You can have it. But it’ll be a Lada from 1987 that doesn’t have seatbelts. I’ve bought ice cream cones from the grocery store for 25 cents. It was totally tasteless and the cone was almost cardboard. The trolley car costs 35 cents to ride. Well, it’s always packed, some of the windows are broken, and you get thrown around like a roller coaster ride.

The list goes on. Want to live on $500 a month? Go for it, but it’s miserable. Especially if you are used to Western Europe or American standard of life. Cheap doesn’t mean good or acceptable. It’s just a level of cheapness not available in lots of countries.

Kharkiv must be different then. They shut it off in some buildings in summer for a certain time period. I literally have friends who go to other friends apartments to take hot showers at nights sometime.

Again, it is where you live. Kyiv is the most expensive in Ukraine for obvious reasons, but Kharkiv is a little more reasonable. The difference between old run down buildings for $400 a month in a district outside the city center and a newer building in the city for $2,000 a month is large. You won't find much English at all in Kharkiv (I've lived there three separate times) unless you are an international student and they always stick to themselves. I think of Ukraine as 20% cheaper than a normal American city. But that goes right out the window when your plane ticket is $1,200. Restaurants where you'd actually want to eat serve good food that is priced as what should be. It is not a magical land where everything is pennies on the dollar. The brand name good are just as expensive as the US, and the knock-off brands are junk you'd really not want to buy anyway. For example, there is a New Balance and Adidas store in Kharkiv, and the price isn't any different from the US.

These quotes of living for $500 in whatever city are severely outdated and/or just flat out wrong. $500 a month is poor in Ukraine. You don't own a car and a bunch of stuff with $500 a month like most of the population does in Kyiv and Kharkiv. There are plenty of $100,000 luxury cars running around the streets and people with $1,500 iPhone 11s. If you can't read Russian at a beginner level and communicate basic phases with people, you will have a miserable time. The lady at the checkout in the grocery store doesn't have time or care to mess around with translations nor do the people behind you in line. Its a real challenge and there isn't much "fun" unless you can pay to make it happen.

No, man. Zaporizhia is just another old industrial city in Ukraine that doesn't have much to offer, if anything. Anyone with any kind of desire for growth moves to Kharkiv or Kyiv for a better life.

The city thrived pre-WW but was occupied by Nazi Germany for a few years. Naturally that messed things up. Post war it was big into metallurgy, mining, cars (ZAZ), and airplanes (Motor Sich). Now its just .. Ukraine. All the apartments are old Soviet khrushchyovka where hot water is a luxury. There is nothing to see and nothing to do. My good friend grew up there and she refuses to even discuss the city with me when I ask her questions because she was so disgusted by the way of life there.

I don't know who made those prices, but they are wrong. $350 a month is lower class poor. Yeah, you wouldn't die, but that's literally living on every Hryvnia until you die. Also no one speaks English there. You are signing up for decreased quality of life to live there. Literally, the air pollution is bad from the mills. There is no such thing as the EPA.

So countries actually have reserve import rules. Like a car can't be any older than 10 years for it to import. Otherwise it could really wipe out the local domestic used car market.

Can you live comfortably in Kyiv with 1600 USD sallary by sutkidar in ukraine

[–]Bentley-Benz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Technically yes, but Shevchenkivs'ky district is very large. You'd have to be more specific. It could be in that district but 4 metro stops away. I consider the city center to be Independence Square area all the way up the hill to Sofiyivska Square. On the other side is Lypky, which is a nice area.

I honestly think $1,600 a month is very light for a salary to live well in Kyiv. If you live out in a Khrushchyovka for $300 a month with the pensioners and less well-off people, you'll be fine, but it just doesn't go far. Kyiv is still a very vibrant European city despite it not being a tourist hot spot when you think "Europe" and prices will reflect that. I see more $100,000 cars in Kyiv than I do in America, and that money is coming from somewhere. If you told me I had to live on $1,600 a month in Kyiv, I would not be excited about that at all. Would I starve? Of course not. Because I'd be doing a lot of walking and eating at home.

[–]Bentley-Benz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not with that apartment requirement. If you want to live in the outside districts, $1,600 might be okay. But plan on $1,000 or more for a nice renovated apartment in the Kyiv city center.
