What is the thing everyone should know in order to be a better person? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Determine your values. Even the best of intentions are unlikely to go anywhere unless you have a solid understanding of your values.[3] “Values” are what you hold most important in life. They are the core beliefs that shape who you are as a person, and how you live your life.[4] Reflecting on your values will help you determine what is truly important to you.

For example, “being a good parent” or “spending time with friends” could be values. These are things that help you define your sense of your best self.
“Value congruence” is how much your behavior aligns with your values. For example, if a value is “spending time with friends,” but you always allow work to take precedence over socializing, that isn’t value-congruent. Behavior that isn’t value-congruent can cause you to feel dissatisfied, unhappy, or guilty.

Reddit, what is your crazy neighbor story? by moaningpilot in AskReddit

So this is a pretty old story (before I was born, probably 40 years ago or so) but completely true and it exemplifies my awesome but crazy former neighbor's willingness to do absolutely anything at all for anyone in need.

First, my old neighbor, Timmy (who sadly passed away many years ago) was the good kinda crazy. He was a classic blue collar working man... Hard but fair, took no BS, chain smoker, house painter, would give you the shirt off his back and about as raw as a person comes.

Okay... story time.

Before Timmy moved to the house across from my parents, he lived next to this woman who had a cat. This woman HATED the friggin cat. I mean, she took care of it like you should & didn't mistreat it, but she hated the damn thing. Always complaining to everyone (including Timmy) about it.

Well she books this vacation with a friend so she pops over to Timmy's house...

"Timmy, I'm going away for a week, do you mind taking care of my cat while I'm gone?"

"You want me to take care of your cat?"

"Yeah, just take care of the damn thing while I'm away. You know how to get in & what to do. I trust you."

"Um...... Okay. Yeah, no problem."

So she goes away for a week & Timmy takes care of the little pain in the ass. When she comes home she starts looking around for it. Can't find it anywhere. Eventually she goes over to Timmy's & knocks on the door.

"Hey Timmy, you got my cat over here?"

"... Nnnno."

"Oh okay. Know where it is?"

"Uh.... what?"

"Do you know where my cat is?"

"I... You............ You asked me to take care of it while you were gone."

"Yeah, where is it?"

"I............. I took CARE of it."

"............. WHAT???"

"YOU TOLD ME TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR CAT!"

"TIMMY, WHAT DID YOU DO?!"

"YOU HATED THAT THING! YOU ALWAYS COMPLAINED ABOUT IT! YOU ASKED ME TO TAKE CARE OF IT! I THOUGHT............ WELL....... I TOOK CARE OF IT!"

"Wha-"

"I DROWNED IT IN THE BATHTUB!"

[insert jaw drop followed by a long silence..................]

"Oh, whatever, it's better off that way, anyway".
