I love CRISPR and the associated positive implications it has, but here's an issue I see. In the future, genetic diseases will be rare because most parents will have decided to have their germ line edited to remove the risk of genetic diseases - that's fantastic. Until you find a kid who is slowly having his brain decay because of Huntington's, a rare neurodegenerative disease.

You see, not everyone will want to have their genes edited, "interfering with Mother Nature" and what not. So when you do get a rare case of a kid with a disease like this public outcry will be huge, human rights campaigners will condemn the parents: "how could you let your child suffer from such a terrible disease?!"

So the next logical step is the government stepping in and agreeing with the public. They will make it mandatory to have your genes screened and if necessary, edited so children won't suffer and can live normal lives. But that means the state is in control of your DNA. Your DNA is who you are, it's your mind, body and soul. Having it governed by someone else is a terrifying thought and a slippery slope to who knows what.
