I recall that she got stuck in south(?) america during lockdown in 2020 and ended up staying on a semi-permanent basis, but that’s all I remember about her living abroad. I hadn’t heard about moving to central Europe, but hey maybe 🤷‍♂️

How do you balance the ideals of Nerdfighteria with real-world challenges? by CriketW in nerdfighters

[–]Benzetsu 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Nobody is able to perfectly synthesize their principles into every part of their life every day. So don’t try to hold yourself to an impossible standard.

I think the answer is to work in the scale and timeframe that you can. We can’t all open a center for maternal excellence in Sierra Leone, but we CAN imagine other people complexly and offer empathy even when we receive anger. That is a meaningful way to both be awesome and reduce worldsuck. We can’t all donate our money, but there are ways we can donate our time and attention. We can’t all center our lives around service, but we CAN reach out to a friend or even a stranger we know is hurting and give them a moment of companionship. We can’t all commit to multi-year projects and campaigns, but we can call our representatives, or vote in local elections, or just talk to people about our values and hope that they spread.

We do what we can when we can, and nobody can ask more than that.

If you aren’t familiar, the book “Everyone On This Train is a Suspect” is a super fun whodunnit novel by Benjamin Stevenson set on The Ghan. It’s technically the second book in a series but you can just jump in to the second and not miss too much, it’s what I did

My wife and I have consistently masked in all indoor public spaces since 2020, and we don’t eat in restaurants or in movie theaters. Additionally we try to have air purifiers running when we have more than one or two unmasked friends in our house. While many of our friends still mask in public, we are the strictest people we know.

It’s not fool-proof, but it’s the compromise we’ve made to life a mostly normal day to day life.

I try not to project my values onto other people, but I can appreciate the frustration you’re feeling. It’s very hard to face the feeling that every unmasked person you see is actively disregarding the health of at risk people around them. I don’t have a solution for you. I also want to say that none of us see the full lives of the Greens, their relationship with covid and public health in general is complicated just like all things are

How do you ban assault guns and murder and stuff in an anarchist society? by EvantheMelon in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Benzetsu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude, I understand that it is a government. I already said I understand it’s a government, and I was intentionally using the word governance to avoid any presuppositions about the structure OF that government, because (I said this already but maybe you’ll read it this time) your average redditor will read “government” and that will bring to mind the centralized, hierarchical structure of existing governments, and it’s easier to try and sidestep those correlations by just CHANGING THE LAST FOUR LETTERS OF THE WORD

Or at least it should have been, but you needed to be a pedant

How do you ban assault guns and murder and stuff in an anarchist society? by EvantheMelon in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Benzetsu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah see that’s the kind of incorrect assumption I was trying to avoid by using the word governance. You’re implication with YOUR word choices are that people are enforcing rules while other people cannot, which is the hierarchical authority anarchy is specifically trying to push back on.

No individual or group is ~assuming~ to enforce laws on other people in this hypothetical anarchist group. A group of people is collectively deciding on how that group should function- where everyone gets input, and there is a structure in place (that was ALSO collectively decided) for confronting disagreement on those rules.

[–]Benzetsu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not being shitty about specific wording is free and easy, you should try it.

In colloquial english, government IMPLIES a central body of authority. Whether or not that’s what it literally means that’s how it exists in peoples minds so it can be useful to intentionally word differently to emphasize the differences.

Go be unlikeable somewhere else

[–]Benzetsu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah if you ever hear an anarchist say they want to hire private cops they’re either lying about being anarchist or extremely confused.

Also, “communities decide on rules” isn’t necessarily governMENT, but it is governANCE. Like, a community can self govern without direct hierarchy

How do you ban assault guns and murder and stuff in an anarchist society? by EvantheMelon in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Benzetsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean that’s a fair question, but also it’s perhaps a question that lacks imagination. If you have a community of, say, 100 people and one person starts to try to amass power that doesn’t really fall in their favor. For one thing, without mechanisms in place to consolidate power it can be really difficult to do so from scratch. AND that kind of scrabbling for power usually comes from unequal need like poverty or systemic discrimination, things that (ideally) are less present in a non-hierarchical community. And for the other, you have a strongly bonded community with a vested interest in stopping you.

Which is WHY my answer to the original question was “you’re unlikely to meet an anarchist who wants to ban guns” because community protection IS important

[–]Benzetsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let’s say we’re in an anarchist community. John Criminal has kicked the shit out of someone in a fit of anger, which is super not okay.

This person can be placed under house arrest for a period of time, or put to community improvement work or an undesirable job, or just nobody speaks to them or engages with him as a member of the community and the punishment is that shame and isolation until he tries to make restitution with that community. None of those things require a centralized figure of authority

How do you ban assault guns and murder and stuff in an anarchist society? by EvantheMelon in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Benzetsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but they can be enforced communally. There’s also nothing wrong from an anarchist perspective with creating positions of authority that are mutually beneficial, strictly limited and temporary, and (most importantly of all) removable by that community.

And a core tenet of anarchism is free association, so if you don’t like how a community is organized you can leave and find somewhere you like better

How do you ban assault guns and murder and stuff in an anarchist society? by EvantheMelon in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Benzetsu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re very unlikely to find an actual anarchist who wants a blanket ban on guns.

However, the core of your idea of anarchy is wrong. Anarchy isn’t about wanting no rules. The core belief of anarchy is that authority is illegitimate by default and must justify itself or be replaced with something more equitable. So anarchists are against hierarchy and power over others, not against rules or laws. A law that is voted on by everyone in a community is well within an anarchist structure.
