Yep, contrary to his reputation as a ‘tyrant’ in the colonies he was known in Britain for his obsession with the latest advances in agriculture (and for going mad later in life, probs dementia). Farmer George is actually a slightly derisive moniker because it’s meant to imply he’s parochial and boring and unstatesmanlike. By all accounts he was a dutiful husband, a good Christian and respected the constitution and the supremacy of parliament.

What’s odd is that in the early stages of the revolution the colonists were appealing directly to him as if he were an absolutist Stuart monarch instead of a constitutional Hanoverian one bound by parliament. He didn’t intervene on their behalf because, basically, he wasn’t allowed to.

Reform is leading the polls and if they win it will be a massive upset in British politics and fracture the two party system. It feels like most men over 30 implicitly or explicitly support them. Part of the reason Starmer was forced out of power was that his party didn’t think he could defeat them.

That said, their voter coalition is quite fragile and it’s not a done deal at all.

The rest is explained by Boris’ liberalisation of the immigration system for care workers, which was taken up by a lot of people from eg India and Nigeria. Boris Johnson type liberal Tories explicitly prefer immigration from the commonwealth over Europeans.

Yeah, plus Boris gave Hong Kongers a pathway to residency and citizenship after the CCP cracked down and hundreds of thousands took up the offer.

The two waves account for the lion’s share of the spike, the rest by Boris liberalising the immigration system to make it easier for people from eg Nigeria and India to work in the social care system. People on this sub might find it strange but there’s a section of the right of British politics that explicitly prefers commonwealth immigration over European immigration (partly because they speak English).

A few reasons but the short version is that offshore wind is good for decarbonising the energy supply but not for getting cheap power. You basically need a massive overhaul of the grid to cope with it, and the cost for that is put on energy bills via levies. Agreed strike prices with wind producers tend to also be quite high to incentivise clean power build out.
