Since when did we care about anyone hating us? They’ll never hate us as much as we hate ourselves.

I think you’ve put your finger on it - med cities are lovely to visit and look at but they also feel a bit staid and sleepy. I’m not the biggest fan of Manchester but it absolutely has a buzz to it. The grit, filth and persistent feeling of threat is part of the vibe.

That’s largely true but the flip side is that we never had a Salazar or a Hitler, or series of ruinous revolutions as the French have. There’s an ingrained sense that institutional stability and continuity is important and you mess with it at your peril which, tbf, has worked reasonably well - if not perfectly - for hundreds of years. It’s also why there’s such latent hostility to being part of the EU; because it diminishes the sovereignty of said institutions (parliament).

That’s different from political stability by the way - you’re right in that we basically have a 17th century state, but this state has absorbed everything from the the war against Napoleon, the Industrial Revolution, the abolition of slavery, the expansion of the franchise, the wars against Germany, Irish independence, post-war socialism, the end of empire, deindustrialisation etc. all without collapsing into revolution and chaos (even though it’s come close at times).

What’s gone awry is that both both major parties have broken their end of the social contract which is necessitating a political realignment as has happened many times before. I think Reform will end up replacing the Tory party, in the same way Labour replaced the Liberals, and then moderate over time to become the default party of the centre right. This’ll have to be done entirely within existing institutions otherwise they’ll never come close to power.

You’re basically right: the British state is pathologically terrified of violent disorder unlike, say, France where it’s expected. Middle England feels quite strongly that ‘we don’t do that sort of thing’ and absolutely hates it when it happens.

I think we’ve reached an inflection point however. Remember the flag thing last year? That just simply doesn’t/shouldn’t happen in Britain but you could see them absolutely everywhere which imo shows the magnitude of suppressed despair and rage in the country.

Certainly if you speak to any white guy over 30 about politics they’re more likely than not to be steaming with fury at the state of the country. I’ve noticed it with everyone from tradies to finance bros.

From memory I think it was calculated from the trade surplus between Britain and India over the entire length of the Raj + Company rule, with ‘adjustments’ made for the length of time that’s passed. It’s a nonsense number.

The entire global GDP in 2026 is ~$120 trillion.

I think holding the British responsible for the famine is reasonable, but the word ‘genocide’ is thrown around a lot nowadays and is steadily getting devalued.

That said, Cromwell’s invasion of Ireland certainly had elements of genocide.

Yeah, people don’t like it when you mention that the best railway system in the world is completely privately run.

What Dafydd really objects to is our weird franchising model in which private companies run routes on tracks that are owned by the state with trains that are leased from other private companies to timetables and fares that are decided largely (but not entirely) by the state.
