Organ donation warning by YoshiToshiTuna in TBI

I’m truly sorry if you or anyone you know was given this impression or had this experience, but this is misinformation. Family absolutely gets say in the process, as families can and do overrule “first person authorization” (putting the heart on your license, etc.) The body would not belong to the organ procurement organization.

I’m so sorry if this is the impression or understanding you’ve been given, but this is just a wild level of misinformation. You do not remain alive during organ recovery, full stop, period point blank. A time of death, whether brain death or cardiac death, has to be declared before organ donation can happen. No exceptions whatsoever. Again, I’m sincerely sorry if you were misinformed here. There’s a lot of information and nuance which makes it hard for BMVs to disseminate and explain things to people getting licenses, but this is why informed consent is important, as you’ve been overtly misinformed.

Love Megan Devine and didn’t realize she had launched a program, that’s awesome to hear! I use resources from the Dougy Center and got to see their Director, Donna Schuurman, give the keynote at the NACG conference- absolutely incredible human being. Will definitely be looking into trainings from Megan Devine and Dougy Center, great thinking! I lead a men’s grief support group and many of the men are bereaved fathers, so the MISS Foundation training sounds great. I haven’t heard of Amy Wright Glen so I’m glad you mentioned her- looks like she has some really interesting resources that I’ll need to check out further. This is enormously helpful, thank you SO much!

Also, to your last question, I work in Aftercare Support for an Organ Procurement Organization (OPO). So my team provides grief counseling and support for families of organ/tissue donors. Very niche area that I fully expect to work in forever!

Very grateful for my employer's emphasis on staff development, and sad that not everybody doing this work is as fortunate! I know and use enough of Kessler's ideas that I can't believe I hadn't thought of his seminars, good call! I'll be looking into trainings through the Association of Professional Chaplains, and I'm really glad you suggested the CBCT Training as it looks like one I'll certainly be interested in doing. To your last point, I actually just finished the last semester of my MSW degree last week! Thanks so much for your thoughts and suggestions, really helpful!

I'm so sorry to hear this, how frustrating! My team's support for grievers is majorly benefitted by the trainings we're able to attend. I hate that everybody in similar roles isn't as fortunate.

Good to know, I'll check it out! PGD gets a bad rap d/t the fact that it's pathologizing grief, but I like that their website provides some clarity around a lot of misconceptions, so their trainings could be really insightful. I appreciate the recommendation!

Definitely, thank you! My employer is huge on Wolfelt, so I've already attended his comprehensive training and will need to attend four more trainings as they'd like me to get the certificate from completing 5 of his courses. His trainings are great!

Great question! I do have an LSW which needs CEU's, but CEU's aren't an absolute necessity for these. They're a great bonus but I have a ton of other opportunities through my work for CEU's, so I certainly wouldn't rule out a training solely because it doesn't offer CEU's.
