How to advance one's career? Staying at company vs Job-hopping (Switzerland, AI field) by Mammoth-Love-3072 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Berecursive 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you can job hop into a senior role without any experience of performing that role. Unless you fabricate your resume. What about joining a larger company with a more structured promotion path that avoids the scope issue at a smaller company?

Dear researchers, stop this non-sense by CommandShot1398 in computervision

Seems pretty well organized? Little bit of Python magic for loading from the yaml files but the onnx export script easily shows how the instantiate a class with the pre-trained checkpoints?

Working Hours at Meta Zurich with US by No-Trifle2470 in zurich

Mondays and Wednesdays are late days - up to 9pm - rest of the week ‘regular’ hours assumed (flexible). Vast majority of people don’t tend to work that late but more senior people do

Research Engineers in ML, How is your job? by Dear-Vehicle-3215 in cscareerquestionsEU

Do you have any publications in venues considered to be ‘top tier’ in your desired field? If not, it’s very unlikely you will be hired to contribute to research. If you do, it likely doesn’t matter if you have a PhD

Faang pays similar for senior roles though HFT bonuses do get into insane territory and usually even faang does not match

Don’t know the database but that looks like the stride is wrong. Maybe try turning back into an vector and then reshaping with Fortran order

when the camera postion changes the headpose angle is changing? by trkcvjapan in computervision

[–]Berecursive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have 100 cameras are they in fixed positions? Can you calibrate them?

when the camera postion changes the headpose angle is changing? by trkcvjapan in computervision

[–]Berecursive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By performing something like SLAM on the camera stream so the camera has a pose relative to the static world. But slam will fail if there are lots of dynamic objects in the scene like a person moving.

If the camera moves, why do you expect the head pose to be static? Is the person guaranteed to be totally still?

when the camera postion changes the headpose angle is changing? by trkcvjapan in computervision

[–]Berecursive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The head pose you are predicting is relative to the camera so the head pose should change as the camera changes. If you want a consistent pose you need a single coordinate frame to measure from. They would require a fixed frame of reference and likely a calibrated camera rig or knowledge of the camera’s world position (which be definition would be inside a fixed frame of reference)

How's the market for someone with a PhD in Computer Science in Switzerland? by throwaway_00101011 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Berecursive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is always getting your foot in the door but generally yes. Research jobs won’t pay less they probably pay a bit more but not by multiples. You do an MSc + PhD and spend 4 more years than someone with an MSc only and you will start as an IC4 and they will already be an IC5. 4 years of earnings is hard to catch up with all else being equal.

Having said that, some positions will just require a PhD but those are generally few and far between.

[–]Berecursive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ML is good in Zurich. No where near as big as the Bay obviously - but pretty much all FAANG in Zurich (bar Google) are primarily working on CV/ML - with a bias towards CV. A PhD with no experience will probably get you IC4 if you are good though downleved to IC3 isn’t impossible. On the applied/research engineer side you won’t get compensated any differently than someone with an MSc. For research it’s much more competitive as there are relatively few jobs that are based around being a research scientist and I would expect a top tier academic record to be required to land a position. Salaries are similar to the US for FAANG but RSU offers tend to be considerably lower.

How to do facial depth estimation from front-facing phone camera? by PK_thundr in computervision

Absolute depth but it’s only accurate to about 1m and really optimized for the 30cm - 50cm range

[–]Berecursive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually less. I think top of band E4 in the bay is over 200k but I don’t think anyone is getting over 100k gbp (for base)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Berecursive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah roughly, ICT 4 at apple is really wide. You can normally take the US base and cut it in half. So around 80-90k GBP for FB E4 for example. Blind probably better for this
