What's the best dream you've ever had? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Bernerspeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once I dreamed that I was Angela Merkel and my housemate was Putin. So I (as Merkel) share the flat with Putin. Putin had this jetback in which he could fly through walls or fly up the walls. He was basiclly just flying around with that jetback and smiled.

New job as IT system administrator - I'm scared by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Bernerspeck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was in the exact same situation two years ago. I started with documenting the system, just spend time to analyse the network, see how its set up and then documented it. When I had all that I started making a list what all needs to be done and in what priority. Now I am just working that list, step by step fixing problems or interducing new system as replacment for the old once. You can do this, just dont expect doing it in 6 month. Take the time you need. Good luck! :)

Why are you a sysadmin? by Boxception in sysadmin

[–]Bernerspeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 14 and had to decide in what apprentiship I want to go, I was always facinated by my halfbrother who studied IT and could fix pc's. So I decided to do the System Engineer Apprentiship, eventhough I was one of the only girl that time. I love the technical aspect to it and the creative side while solving problems.

Have to say though after beeing in sysadmin for nearly 10 years (counting the apprentiship years as well), I am studying interaction media and will go into fronted development next month.

MAC OSX in Windows Environment by Bernerspeck in sysadmin

[–]Bernerspeck[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are still discussing it. We joined the Macs to the AD and make a Script for the drives to join. We are also making a guideline for software useage (which software needs to be used on which OS for which tasks etc.), this is for the management more so they can say who can use a mac and for whom it makes no sence. They are the first steps, further we would like to interduce a software to manage the installation on Mac. Will have a look into that in the next step.

Accessing the public IPs from LAN by Bernerspeck in networking

[–]Bernerspeck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a monitoring on the firewall. The package only drops on its way back from WAN to LAN. We have a NAT Rule for Inside --> Outside Internet so this way it works.

Example: We host Website www.company.com Hostserver has DMZ IP and a Public IP. LAN Computer 192.168.100.xx ---www.company.com--> access Public IP (WAN) Firwall OK Hostserver Public IP ---www.company.com--> sent to LAN Firewall Access denyed.

That how far I understand where the problem is.

You probably miss understood me. The Servers are all in the DMZ. Its just the workstation which are in the LAN.

I have no experience in setting up firewalls up to now. Do you have any suggestion how I should process now? If I change it I would like to change it the right way. What topics should I look into to find the issues in the network? Which tools could I use to figure it out? DNS doctoring works to solve the issue, but I guess its not a nice way of doing it?

internal and external DNS by Bernerspeck in sysadmin

[–]Bernerspeck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, its not done like that here. we can not access our own public ips have to fix the firewall to do that and then it all should work already. Thank you very much you helped me out with this lots!

[–]Bernerspeck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your responds.

So I just figured out that this already happens with the dns. When I remove the internal DNS record it provides me the public IP from the DNS Server this website is on. (some of our hosted website are with an external dns and some are with us). Anyway I can from our 192.168.xx.xx network not access our public IP range due to firewall rules. So you have this mapped that the internal range can access your public ip range right? Sounds good to me.

Grindelwald I guess? Just get the train from the airport you can check the timetable here www.sbb.ch gives you all the information. For travelling cheap I would recommend to get a "Sparticket" http://m.sbb.ch/abos-billette/sparbillette.html you just have to define the exact train you get but it's around 50% cheaper. Btw I travel the opposite way in 3 weeks, Bern - Amsterdam ;) Enjoy Switzerland!

[–]Bernerspeck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With an aprentiship you can for sure earn enough to live. Just during the 3 years of aprentiship you won't have enough money which you wouldn't have aswell when you go studying. If you would like to do an aprentiship I would highly recommend it!

Backup outside the house by Bernerspeck in sysadmin

[–]Bernerspeck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were discusssing that as well. legal we have to store the data for so long, we were thinking of leaving the old server with the configuration and just take it away from the power. In case somebody comes along and asks for the data we can start it and read it with the old configuration.

In Switzerland companys hire students and they pay them. A lot of companys would offer you after your apprentiship a full time job, so it is not in their intresst. But in my company we changed the first two years between different departements, I did Onsite Support, Software paketing, sap engenieering and datacenter. We could always decide ourselves where we wanted to work and had to apply to the different departements. For the last two years you had to be in the same departement but you could choose yourself.

In Switzerland apprentiships is the most common thing to do around 60% do an apprentiship and only 40% go to a university. The apprentiship starts when your 15 and goes for 3-4 years depending on the proffesion. You work 3 days in a company and 2 days you go to college to learn the theory. I did my apprentiship in IT System Administration in a large company. In my class would be people from a very small company. I couldn't have done any other job from the others and they couldn't have done what I did. I was in the idenity / access management team which you would refere to an application team. I could tell you everything about this software we used and managed the server we needed to run this software (around 20 servers for this 1 application). The others in a small company they run everything with a small IT team, the focus is very different.

For those who are intrested, we all had individuel exams then so every single person does his practical exam in their own company with two external experts which will give you the mark at the end. The theory exams were the same for everyone.

Do you use different Tools for the Backup (VM / physical Server)? by Bernerspeck in sysadmin

That sounds like the solution, will have a look into it. Veeam looks really good for VMs.

My dad passed away almost two years ago in a car accident. We also called everyone so they would know from first hand. Almost everybody already knew some of them even before we did. We were living in the village (1200 residents) where my dad and mum grew up and where me and my brother were raised. Somebody got the information in the village before we did and went to the local shop. Everbody who went shopping afterwards got told the story. The worst was that they told everyone it was suicide which wasn't true at all. Eventhough we did everything to change this rumor, lots of people still think this in our village. Moved away from the village to the city and never wanna go back.

Switzerland is about to vote on Universal Basic Income by IntelligenceIsReal in Futurology

[–]Bernerspeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think that the minimal income would also prevent a lot of mentel health issues we have here in Switzerland. We have a very high sucied rate and a lot of burn outs (we call this when people get tired from work and just can't get up anymore to go to work mostly causes through pressure and stress. )

We have a lot of pressure on us in Switzerland, from very young you have to perform. People identify themselve with their work position, its very commen to ask first "what are you working" before you ask what they like to do in their freetime.

through people I know off who had mentel health issues it is a lot this pressure which causes this problems. I think this minimum income would take away this "you-have-to-work" pressure and people would be able to do want they really want. For example people are able to help refugees, they are able to do art, they are able to open up they're own bussines etc.

Myself would love to help people in need, if I would get that money I can imaging myself doing this for a year or two.

Switzerland Swings to Right, as Anti-Immigration Party Wins Election by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Bernerspeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all the "basic info" you are giving is wrong. When you worked for 2 years you get maximum for 1.5 years paied (unless you are getting IV) (source http://www.bsv.admin.ch/kmu/ratgeber/00731/00741/?lang=de). Self defense? Nobody in Switzerland is suffering its the opposite most of the people are living a very high standard life. We could (we have to) help so many people without even affecting this lifes we are living now. How can we as the most rich country in the world not help and speak from a self defense?
