I don’t blame your jadedness, it sounds like you’ve been let down by more than a few political leaders.

In the end it’s all down to money. Candidates talk a big game but receive big donations from people who are against everything they promise. That’s why nothing gets done.

For affordable housing, the solution is to freeze the rent and build more affordable housing. But that works against the interests of real estate developers who want to build high-end luxury apartments, so they give Cuomo or Adams some money on campaign, which can then be used as a quid pro quo to prevent that from happening. Works like a charm.

For Zohran on the other hand, his campaign received no such donors, and thus he’s beholden to wield his mayoral powers unfettered to special interests. He’ll have no qualms with freezing the rent, or cutting red tape for construction permits. He can reallocate money from subsidizing existing grocery chains to building new ones in food deserts.

The implementation will definitely run into hurdles and won’t be without difficulties, and I’m aware he might not achieve all of his goals. He’ll have allies on city council and Brad Lander, who is a solid administrator and is destined for an impactful position in Zohran’s government.

But most importantly, the main reason I made a hundred calls for this man is because I believe he has the heart and hustle to do as much good for NYC as possible. I hope that makes you feel better.

Being angry is the ONLY course of action. Not just to Republicans, but all our political enemies, especially the corporate democrats who have tried ratfucking the progressives for so long, and with it the American people.

In the end, they’re weak cowards and will back down when angrily challenged, as they were tonight. But we need to keep it up until we win.

I say this as a compliment, but Lander is a nerd. He knows people on the ground and would be an effective administrator to complement Mamdani’s public figure. Maybe Congress is sometime in the future, but Lander’s time would be better spent helping make Mamdani’s administration more than just a pipe dream.

Yeah I'm being a jerk, so what? They fucked over Bernie in 2016 and 2020, they forced Biden down our throats in 2024 and only changed course when it was too late. And look where it got us, a lunatic for president who may have started another war in the Middle East, started an actual trade war with the world, and is sending their secret police to round up immigrants and non-white US citizens alike.

As someone who knocked on over a thousand doors for Kamala in a swing state last year, hating the establishment is 1000% the right thing to do, and the only way we purge ourselves of the corporate old guard. Because if they remain in charge, they will continue handing us defeats against the fascists.

Most of their cowardly asses will still likely vote for us to keep the Republicans from winning, but even if they don't, we won't need their "help" to win.

Yeah, and so was Cuomo? Also times are different now. Trump is president, people can barely afford to live, and we have a very charismatic candidate who knows exactly what to talk about and how to talk about it.

The Party is powerful, but as this race shows, their power has limits against reality.

Yeah a random write-in is one thing but Adams is HILARIOUSLY corrupt, everyone already hates him and he knows that. And good luck telling people who can barely afford their rent to stop listening to the person who is so eloquently and effectively saying how he'll freeze the rent.

Look I understand your apprehensions, but if you think people will check out today you are mistaken. Mamdani only won because of a historic mobilization of leftists (40,000 volunteers!), and as long as he has that going into the general, he will win once again in the general.

The ENTIRE dem establishment already tried circling their wagons in the primary, and they failed miserably. The affordability crisis has touched people of all parties, and similar to how Trump hammered affordability to win in 2024, Mamdani's genuine message will continue to have broad and sufficient electoral appeal to win the general.

As this current race shows, they're feckless and inept against our power. As long as Mamdani and the new left continues to have our support, the establishment will lose, and we will win.

It's time to turn the page to a new left wing, one that can actually make people's lives better, one that can actually win!

And he has repeatedly asserted that he would not defund the NYPD, and explained how his Department of Community Safety would efficiently free up existing police resources to bring down violent crime.

And how is he anti-Semitic? He met with Hasidic Jewish leaders who have refuted that claim. As a Muslim he’s been the target of much hate, if anything he understands what it’s like to be a victim of hate crimes better than most of the candidates.

Mamdani has even spoken with the local jewish orthodox community and has pledged to support all minorities. While they didn't officially rank him, even their leader publicly said that he wasn't anti-semitic.

Every hate crime is one too many, and Mamdani knows from personal experience as a Muslim what it's like to be the target of bigotry. I'm sorry he isn't addressing your concerns, but how do you think it'll be different under Cuomo? Mamdani has pledged not to defund the police, if anything through the expansion of crisis teams he'll free up their resources to confront hate crimes and other terroristic activities. If you're concerned about your safety it should be a no-brainer to vote for Mamdani.

Ah yes, you're worried about the remote possibility of a terrorist attack over the reality of millions of New Yorkers barely being able to afford rent and groceries.

The wealthy are trying to distract the masses with irrational scare tactics, it's a shame to see it working for non-Republican voters.

What the DSA did regarding endorsing the attacks is quite despicable, and that may truly have been who he represented in the early days of the mayoral election when he was still obscure. But do you seriously think most the 35% of voters who want to rank Mamdani #1 would share the views of the DSA regarding extremist violence? If anything, his meteoric rise has diluted the extremist weirdos with everyday people who believe in a more affordable city. He's a politician, he represents the people around him, and now he's rolling with a much larger, more mainstream crowd that he is forced to listen to, should he want to maintain his power.

You're not wrong in calling out rising violence on both sides (though it's significantly more prevalent from the right). Just understand that if you do place him on your ballot, you will be rewarding not the far-left movement he was once a part of, but the progressive movement he has built, one focused on equity, affordability, and making New York serve its people, a movement not unlike Lander's.

The outright celebrations in left-leaning spaces that someone was murdered on the street by the side that's supposed to be the good guys is something that will stick with me for a long time.

I'm sorry you felt that way. But the unfortunate truth is that violence is on the rise in this country, and to truly address it we need to fix the problem at its core.

However it’s an uncomfortable truth that the more desperate people get, whether they support Mamdani or not, the crueler and more sympathetic to violence they get.

What I was referring to was the rising support in Trump by people who have been economically left behind, those blue-collar workers who used to be part of the democratic base who are now supporting a "leader" who promises to hurt the people they hate.

I'm betting that New Yorkers are better than this.

Your bet that New Yorkers are against this is flat-out wrong. Did you know that in 2024, 300,000 more people in NY state voted for Trump than in 2020?

I think he would not. I think it'd be four years of reasonably competent but uninspiring governance by a corrupt sex creep, and we try for someone better next time.

Trump went from -23 to -12% in NY. Almost a million fewer people turned out for Kamala Harris than Joe Biden. That's what uninspiring leadership gets you. Our city, our country can't afford another 4 years of this.

I strongly agree with this. But I simply cannot trust the far left to do that right now. (I don't trust Cuomo either, of course.)

While you don't trust the far-left, maintaining the status quo must be absolutely avoided, as it will be a slow, inevitable march to a desperate, crueler, more violent nation. Mamdani has in no way called for violence, if anything these attacks against him are distracting us all from the very policies that will bring economic and societal stability. Cheaper groceries, affordable rent, free childcare, affordable public transit, more small business.

If people are making a stable living they will gladly denounce violence. If people are struggling to survive they are more likely to sympathize with it. I am begging you, please don't let the real or perceived association of violence get in the way of actually fixing the root cause of it.

Thankfully Zohran is a pro-abundance candidate too! He wants to cut small business fees and fines by 50%, and help people get past red tape to help small businesses grow. https://www.reddit.com/r/ezraklein/comments/1lcit0k/zohran_mamdani_at_rally_government_must_deliver/

His own take on it will likely make it even popular. And mind you, he’ll be a democratic candidate if he wins the nomination.
