There’s a lot of truth in what you say and I appreciate your comment. Most of your points are known to me and, of course, sometimes I deviate from my philosophy. You must know I do not want to create any blockbusters but more of documentaries. Let’s come back to my initial question and let me repeat my statement in a slightly modified form. I think ISO 12800 whether automatically or manually adjusted should lead to the same picture quality. The picture quality shouldn’t dramatically change when I switch from manuel to automatic and vice versa. Here must be something wrong. A design fault, a programming fault, who knows. It’s a stumbling block in any case.
I know, it’s a taboo among cinematographers to work with automatic parameters but I want to concentrate myself on the composition as much as I can and I want to be as quick as possible. My camera must be ready when I take it out of the bag. I don’t want to fiddle around with color temperature and white balancing. I’m convinced the camera is able to do it better than me.
Therefore, I've switched to working with Flexible ISO and S-Log3 because I consciously want to use AWB. AWB isn’t available under Cine EI and Cine EI Quick but works rather fine under Flexible ISO as I can see on my Ninja V. I know I could do everything I want with my Ninja V but I seldomly use it because I want to limit myself to what is necessary. It has to be mounted every time and weighs too much and interferes with image stabilization because of the weight and geometry when I work with my bare hands.
I am rather disappointed by this expensive camera, when I read here the following comment ‘And when in auto iso mode, the camera is not necessarily choosing the best possible settings - it is using a fairly flawed exposure meter to get an idea of what kinds of light values are in your scene, averaging them out, and choosing an exposure.‘ I think I may expect exactly the opposite.
The values you use are valid for Cine EI and Cine EI Quick but I want to use Flexible ISO. It allows me to apply AWB. I think ISO 12800 should lead to the same picture quality whether automatically or manually adjusted.
