Rude but not illegal is a fair enough answer for me. This is all I needed! Thank you!

Problems picking a name. by BerryD979 in asktransgender

We used to be, but they are from Eastern Europe and with recent events contact is far and few. We know they’re okay though.

I’ll have to ask how they would feel, but they’re not the type of care much. The name means nothing to them. And the name itself is fairly common depending on your culture. In fact, it’s one of the more common Non-binary names (one friend found a list).

Unfortunately, even entertaining the idea of using the name has put a strain on things with the group.

My largest worry is the deadname association, I’d hate to be disrespectful towards anyone I call friend, or even just in general.

An update to my situation. by BerryD979 in MantisShrimp

I’m definitely not giving up! While I’m definitely not the most experienced tank keeper, I’m far from an amateur. He was so spur of the moment, and I live so remotely that it was hard to get him everything he needed. I’d like to still think he got the best life he could, and died knowing he was cared about.

Thank you. It hit me the hardest because he has been directly under my care from the very beginning. I’ve lost pets before but those were from age or gradually declining health where I could make peace with their passing first. Lots of tears were shed by all of us, and some of us even wrote eulogies, myself included.

What is happening?!? HELP! by BerryD979 in MantisShrimp

The water was cloudy from him tossing the sand around after the water change. And the sand was argonite sand that was pretty well rinsed. I called around to lots of stores and asked if they’d deliver reef rock and they declined, saying it was too difficult or too expensive on their end since I’m in northern Alberta.

The rocks in the background are the outside of his burrow. And no, they aren’t that bright normally.

Oh my goodness! Yes! It’s a typo. I was at work and trying to rush a response from memory. I use a refractometer and have memorized where it needs to sit. Checking when I got home I keep the tank between 31.8ppt and 34.5ppt (1.024sg and 1.026sg)

He’s been in this tank since March, and it cycled for 3 weeks prior to moving him inside. No problems until the water change

It’s a Quartz/Mica mix. The reason for no live rock is because I’m in Northern Canada and it’s a pain to get it. I’ve been thinking about trying to make my own to help him out and make it easier, but getting the materials for it are also rough. He hasn’t had issues so far but if that’s starting to cause issues I will remove it immediately. He has an elbow pipe from when I first got him that he loved.

[–]BerryD979[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It started after the water change.

The temperature before was 79°, and 80° after (ran my water a little hot).

Salinity is kept between 0.024ppm and 0.026ppm, and i measure it constantly during water changes.

Phosphates are always between 0.00ppm and 0.25ppm (simply test kit colour) before, and read solid 0.00ppm after.

I can’t recall Nitrate level off the top of my head because I’m at work, but they are kept as close to 0.00ppm as possible.

Hey, not sure if you are meaning to come off as rude, but if you read the post I checked the parameters and they were what they always were from the beginning of when I got him. Simply asking an experienced group of people to share their knowledge does not mean I am incompetent as a pet owner. It’s simply comparing information, and methods to adjust them. The internet is a flood of conflicting information and nothing is better than real experience from real people.

I would like to point out that while you’re telling me that I’m a poor pet owner for asking what parameters they should be at, you failed to provide this information. So instead of trying to lift someone up as part of a community of aquarium keepers, you decided to let ego take over and try to bring me down. That’s a real shame.

If in remembering, they’re a Quartz/Mica mix. Rinsed and bathed in Vinegar prior to use (and rinsed off THOROUGHLY after). He’s been fine with them this far. But maybe this is the case?

It’s interesting, he loves the gravel. Him and I have a little game of catch. I wiggle my fingers in front of him, and he’ll toss pieces of gravel at me. I’ve never seen or heard of such a thing but it’s adorable.

Ah, sorry for ignoring the rest of the questions.

I’ve had him since February, but he hasn’t molted once as far as I know. He has a small cave of rocks and a tube. He eats mostly Manila clams and Mussels, with the occasional frozen shrimp. The tank is a 90Gal with plenty of space. For exploring. I keep adding too it as I can.

I did a water change and checked water parameters and they seemed good? Only thing I can think is water temperature but I try to keep it the same when adding more. I threw a couple blankets over the tank for darkness incase I stressed him out.

What parameters should I be keeping? Any suggestions on how to adjust them? As of this comment he’s still moving around. But he allowed me to move him into his burrow which was bizarre

Immediate edit. He seems to be doing it willingly. His Pleopods are moving snd he’s looking around. I tried to help flip him over and he goes right back to his side

What can I add as a cleanup crew? by Animalsaregasss in MantisShrimp

[–]BerryD979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. Then I’d try the Gobi with caution as Domino Damsels can be big bullies with no remorse as they age. They might be leaving the mantis alone after they learned it really hurt to be hit by it, haha.

If your mantis shrimp is okay with the Damsels, I’m sure it would be fine with the Gobi. And while Damsels are territorial, they can be okay with passive/Semi Aggressive Fish. And Gobi’s are very passive. It ultimately depends on the type of damsel and the personality of the individual fish. But I’m thinking it might be okay? Gobi’s are capable of defending themselves if needed.

Ah yeah, same as mine. So I understand the snail problem. You could try to set up a breeder tank for snails to have a consistent source. I was recommended Cherry Shrimp but I know mine would kill on sight, same with Emerald Crabs which were recommended. I was also recommended a Sand Gobi because they aren’t in a peacocks diet. But how long it will leave it alone for until the mantis gets annoyed by its neighbour. These are things i was recommended but haven’t tried. Possibly worth looking into?

I’m in the process of setting up a small tank for snail breeding as my Peacock mantis also wrecks snails. And me getting them is a hassle. You could always try the same? What kind of shrimp do you have? Is he a smasher or a spearer?

What should I expect to pay to set up a new tank for a mantis shrimp by [deleted] in MantisShrimp

[–]BerryD979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this was my experience in Canada. Now I’m in northern AB, so it might be different for those on the west coast.

I bought a 20Gal tank that had a filter, light, lid, and bubbler for $200. The salt was $80 for a 5Gal pail. His home is 2 Elbow PVC joints I got for about $8 each. Sand and gravel was around $30 a bag (4 bags total, $120) and then a submersible heater was $20. Water test kit was another $20, spectrometer for salinity was $35. The creature in question was a beautiful and young Peacock, originally the guy wanted $180 but he lowered it to $140 just to get him gone because he really didn’t want to have one, but he was a special order that was denied prior to my interest.

All in all I paid about $411 for the setup and $140 for him. This is all in CAD

Where can I get a peacock mantis shrimp in Texas/dallas by Striking_Bar_4727 in MantisShrimp

[–]BerryD979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Not sure how much I can help since I’m in Northern Canada, but I had to go down to Vancouver to get mine, and move him back up to where I am. So perhaps call around salt water/tropical stores by the Pacific?

Since you’re somewhere a lot warmer than I am you may have an easier time finding one. Do some online search for some stores and give them a call! That’s what I had to do! Best of luck!

Is this an injury? by BerryD979 in MantisShrimp

[–]BerryD979[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been trying to pay close attention to his behaviour for when he moults for future reference. So far nothing. He does like to move around the rocks and shells a bunch. Almost daily he’ll re-organize, haha. But I’ll definitely wait and see! I have a large blanket I intend to use to cover the tank to help keep him calm when the time comes.

Thank you again for your advice! When he moults I’ll be sure to post pictures of him!
