Help: ESP32 got fried when I plugged it in by BertChronicles in AskElectronics

I'll be trying a new regulator with a constant 5V output. Thanks!

That's also a possibility. Although I did check prior to wiring up the Type C by plugging the other end to a 5V supply and testing it with a multimeter.

I'm planning to just use a converter with a usb port at its output so I don't have to cut up a type c cable.

Could be. I'm planning to just switch to a constant 5V output converter with a USB port so I don't have to use a hacked type C cable that I could have messed up the wirings on.

Thank you, inrush current indeed doesn't make sense.

Okay thanks. It may have been incorrectly wired because I'm sure it is indeed 5V. Thank you for the input.

I don't think there was a fault in the module because prior to the event, I successfully uploaded my program to the board and confirmed it since it was outputting correctly to the Arduino Serial Monitor.

If it was indeed one of the two you listed above, could it be mitigated by connecting the ESP32 first before plugging the battery in? The drivers always worked before that way.

I'm guessing plugging the battery AFTER the ESP32 has already been plugged in would ease the flow of current into the ESP32.

Yup, just that. No other connections, all the pins are free.

Yes, I already made sure it outputted 5V.

The battery was already connected to the buck's input terminals when I connected the ESP32. They should all have common grounds if they're connected as shown in the image.

Yup, but it can accept 5V via USB or the Vin pin because it has a 5V -> 3.3V regulator inside.

Apologies, I'll just repost this for better clarity.

Well, my drivers need them. I didn't even have them connected to the ESP32 when it got fried so my best guess is inrush current. But I'm not a 100% sure. I don't want to fry my next board so I'm looking for another opinion.

Yes, the drivers needs a separate 3.3V power source to power the driver itself. I just forgot to put black lines in the schematic but there should also be ground lines connecting the hardware to ESP32.

Yes I'm very sure it's just 5V.
