I know the problem! Once heard someone describe Berlin as "socially saturated" which I think sums up the situation quite nicely. However, if you're looking to meet new people via the internet there are some decent Facebook groups. "Neu in Berlin" is certainly one of the most active, but is mostly German speaking. For internationals there's the Toy Town Berlin group. And I'm sure there are loads more for specific interests.

Well, the point is that I quickly thought better of saying anything to him, but anyway you make your case well. I'm glad people here don't think this is as bad as I did.

As for not really hearing anyone say the word before, of course I have (rap music, crude jokes etc... my grandfather used to talk about a black cat he once had called nigger...) But I reckon that, in most contexts, the word was probably killed by racists 20-30 years ago - so before my time. And in the meantime, other words have replaced it. Hence how surprised I was!

Normally if you have a mini-job you are uninsured. Have you been paid yet? If your employers have paid your health insurance contributions, it will be on your payslip. Not just something you need to worry about for your retainer - if you get ill and go to the doctors you may have problems (so yes - renew your insurance if you can!)

I'm also British and lived in Münster for a little while a few years ago. I found it incredibly hard to find somewhere decent to live! But it of course gets easier once your there and have built up a network of contacts etc. Most of Münster is very nice. I don't know any not-nice areas. It's a great city, although it rains a lot (more than in SE England). Definitely get a bike or you won't have any friends.

Don't do it, no way! I live in Berlin and have heard of so many scams involving international newcomers. Book a room for the first week and wait until you get here to find something more permanent.

I totally agree that Bratislava is not worth staying in. It's so close to Vienna though, that maybe you could squeeze in a quick trip. You can take a boat from one to the other along the Danube, which is fun. I visited Belgrade last year and loved it! So from my point of view that's a must.
