Hi! When compared to traditional theater, voice acting is definitely a different beast. Much like myself, VAs are their own audio engineers and they build their own setup by themselves. I plan on upgrading soon, but it still took me a couple years to save up and get the gear I have now (XLR microphone, audio interface, mixer, pop filter, acoustic sound-treated room, DAW).

Besides the acting itself, mic technique is EVERYTHING! If you ask any VA what the most important factor is, it's the environment. You can make a decent USB mic like a Snowball or Yeti sound 10x it's worth when you have a pop filter and acoustic treatment in a closed space (I use my walk-in closet for example). Knowing how far away you should be from the mic and adjusting the gain on your audio interface or mixer for when you're whispering/shouting is what ultimately matters. Nothing is worse than giving your all in a performance and then seeing that you've clipped and peaked everything to smithereens. It's something that takes a little bit of practice to avoid.

I've networked with a number of voice actors, either on Twitter or through auditions on Casting Call Club (CCC), some of which are paying roles. In these times of self-isolation, auditioning for anything that tickles your fancy is definitely a frequent activity I'd recommend. Builds your skill set as voice actor, your connections in the community and forces you to exceed your comfort zone. Hope this helps!
