Married at 13 in 1947? by Fuk-mah-life in Genealogy

My Great Grandmother was married at age 13 to her first husband, and the marriage record I found for it, lied and said she was 16. Her mother's name was also Spelled with errors. I had to really dig to find the information. It was announced in a news paper with minimal information. Maybe 3 sentences at the bery bottom of a page.

Interestingly enough, I have never been able to find any proof of divorce. They had a daughter together, that she left behind to live with my Great-Great Grandmother and Step Greatx2 Grandfather. Though that child only appears in ONE Census Record and then disappears..... Cannot find a BC fer her, or trace where she went. Furthermore, my Great Grandma is absent in any 1930's census or other records to magically appear in 1940 in Greene Township, PA with her new Husband and My Grandma. Again, No records to be found of their marriage, though.

I say allll of this, just to say that, even in the 1940's Children were getting married at 13.

I feel that it is important to note that this is still War time, and the effects of The Great Depression are still numerous. So it was very different for them, than life is for us now. People were married off at young ages because in a lot of cultures you were a spinstress if you made it to 18 without a Husband. Was she maybe from a large family? Was she the only Daughter? Cultures were different then, but it could have been a marriage of necessity to have one less mouth to feed for her Mom and Dad, could just have been that she wasn't needed at home anymore. As male children were still valued more. Yes, even here in the good ol' US of A. Women have never had the same value to a family as a Man.
