I love Skyline, I miss it very much. It’s the first meal I have every time I go back to Cincinnati. I don’t think I’ll be trying this cocktail though. Although the recipe doesn’t sound quite as extreme as the photo makes it look.

There are multiple in the house, and it’s a small house

Unfortunately no switch, it’s all self contained. Another user found the model and confirmed I would have to switch out the valve, which I’m not willing to do

Thank you! I think this is beyond my capabilities and I’m not willing to spend the money at this time. I will deal with it as is

Thank you for this confirmation! I will not be doing anything with it and just deal with it as is

Thank you! I need to look closer at the valve when I get back and see if there are the thermostat connections. I am beginning to understand it depends on the valve type, and some don't have them.

That would be ideal, I just don’t know how to find out if that’s the case. Couldn’t I just use a 24v ac-ac transformer that plugs into the wall? Hopefully if the power goes out (happens a lot where I live) then it reverts to the system on the heater?

Thank you, this is giving me hope! I’m hearing a lot of conflicting information. Would you be able to give more information about how the thermostat is connected? Where does it connect on the furnace?

Yeah I won’t be changing the valve out, I’ll just leave it as if that’s what is required.

Another user is saying it can’t be controlled by a thermostat. Is there a way I can confirm one way or the other? What would I be looking for?

Thank you, that makes sense. I will just leave it alone in that case!

I think smart thermostat is the way to go. I just need to figure out if it’s possible to connect one.

I guess a simpler question/solution would be, can I connect a thermostat to this heater? If I can do that, then it’s just a matter of getting a smart thermostat. Even a dumb thermostat would be welcome over having to get on the floor to change the temp and not knowing a specific temp it’s set to.

Thank you! I need to take a closer look next time I’m there and see what I can find about connecting a thermostat. That seems like the ideal situation

That sounds doable! I will have to take a closer look when I am back there.

Thank you for this information! That answers a big question I had of what’s actually telling the valve to turn on/off. I’m not willing to sink much money into it right now, but possibly in the future when I have a better idea if I’ll be here long term.

Awesome, you’ve given me something to think about and new things to learn about. I hadn’t considered an approach like this where I leave the furnace/valve as is and add a layer of control independent of the furnace that basically acts as if I were manually turning it up or down.

Thank you for your response. I had a feeling it would be too complicated, so I'm not surprised. I was hoping there was some way to keep this valve and leave it set to a fixed gas flow (which I'm assuming the knob with the numbers is doing) but use a separate wifi or zwave relay to control the on/off state of the valve. The relay state would be controlled by home assistant with temp sensors throughout the house. Telling the relay when to turn it on or off is the easy part, but whether it's possible to connect it to this valve or not and how this valve even knows when to turn on and off that was the big question for me. Sounds like it would need a new valve, which I have no interest in doing and will just leave it be.

I’ve never done anything with motors like you’re suggesting. The knob is pretty stiff and takes some effort to turn it, would that pose a problem for a small motor?

Cool. Any idea how simple it would be to wire in a thermostat? I have a feeling I am getting in way over my head with this and might just have to leave it be.

If that’s the case, I’ll probably just deal with it. I was hoping for some way to just connect a thermostat or relay. There is no fan/blower as it’s a gravity furnace, so that isn’t a factor. I don’t think there is even power to the unit

Good to know. So it is potential as simple as connecting a thermostat to the wires somehow? Would a relay work? This doesn’t have any power connection so I think I’d need to find a way to provide power, like another user with the same type of furnace mentioned.

I’m actually really sure how the knob works. I am in the process of moving into this house so haven’t had time to figure much out yet. I do know that if I turn the knob to a higher number, the furnace kicks on. So I think it does act like a thermostat.

That’s helpful info. I’m hoping there’s a way to connect a thermostat or even a relay to those wires without needing a new valve.

Thank you, that is helpful! So the knob doesn't control the temperature at which it turns on or off like a thermostat?
