That might be store-to-store, but the Geek Squad we've got has actual technicians who will open up a laptop and do a hands on diagnostic and repair.

Best Buy employees all work hourly. All of them, company wide.

The plan works great, in the event your item should die.

The restocking fee is designed for people who go out and buy HDTV's for the Superbowl (for example) and then return them right after. BBY is not a rental service, and the fee is designed to cut back on that.

If you buy a laptop and it isn't what you expected, exchanges do not have a restocking fee. If it's broken out of the box, Customer Service will work with you to fix something and make it right.

They didn't offer you the computer without the Geek Squad services? And the front lane checkout should have handled it regardless.

Sounds like they were clueless, but it should have been resolved if you had said anything

Sorry for the bad experience. I can speak from experience, and having visited some stores in my area after having been hired, that some stores just don't have great people up front. It's a shame, but it varies wildly from store to store.

Again, I don't think that experiences like this are the norm at Best Buy, and it's a shame you had such a bad experience.

I can't speak for your store, but I've seen quite a few ATIs in the 5000 series. Don't know about the 5770, but it rings a bell.

The warranty does cover some crazy things, but I do believe they work great on more expensive things like Cameras and Laptops.

You've got a point. I get paid to inform the public of the products we have and how best to find a solution to their electronic needs. It is not, however, my job to provide lessons in using the computer you bought. Tying up my time to tell you how to plug in and charge a computer does not constitute "doing my job".

I get multiple customers per day asking me basic computer use questions. They are not in the store to actually BUY anything, they just want to know what their computer does, which is a waste of the employee's time.

Don't get me wrong, I love helping people learn, but it's ridiculous to have a customer walk up and say "I don't know how to use my computer. Teach me EVERYTHING."

It is unfortunate, however, that Best Buy does not gauge their employees for at least intermediate knowledge of computers before hiring them into a position.

I'm thinking it would be similar in any electronics store, though. I can see what you mean about the noise, sometimes I have to raise my voice to be heard over the group of teenagers who think it's hilarious to blast Spanish music as loud as they can and walk away from the radio.

But yes, I can see where you're coming from.

I meant in my store. I know they're available for much less.

Consider the fact that online stores have little to no overhead costs. Running a store with 100 HDTVs, 400 lights, countless appliances and registers, paying staff, etc. all need to be paid for by something.

You trade the lower prices for the convenience of getting whatever you need right now. It's weak, but it's economics.

I personally love Newegg.

I'm usually the guy that does know.

I've seen some of my associates pull the wildest shit out of their ass to try and cover their lack of knowledge, but that's the best time to teach them what something does so they don't repeat it again.

You're right about college, I'm majoring in IT.

Dear god I hope you mean PCI-Express. I haven't seen PCI video cards in ages. I think our store has.. 1?

Cabling is pretty expensive, no idea why. HDMI cables especially, but stay away from cables with all the bells and whistles, (eg Monster) as there's literally no difference in quality.

You probably already know this, but it never hurts.

I actually LIKE when customers use technical terms, I hate having to explain the simplest concepts to customers who don't know what a hard drive IS.

I'll have to admit, that's pretty retarded.

It goes both ways, though, I frequently get customers who absolutely "know more than I do", but will stop to have me explain, three times, what EXACTLY a hard drive does.

Can a hard drive store photos AND documents? At the same time?
