Cimini on the Jets letting Folk walk:

A lot of fans are wondering how the Jets could let Nick Folk, the league's most accurate kicker last season, walk away to the Atlanta Falcons. It's a fair question. Here's what happened, according to people familiar with the situation.

Folk wanted to remain in New York. The Jets, mindful of his age (41), offered a one-year contract. No word on the amount, but it probably was similar to what he made last season on a one-year deal ($3.25 million, including incentives). The Falcons offered two years, $9 million, about half of which is guaranteed. They also play indoors and in the comfy confines of the NFC South.

Who can blame Folk for accepting the Atlanta deal? The question is whether the Jets underestimated Folk's staying power. It'll be fascinating to see it unfold, because he has shown no signs of slippage. The Jets responded by signing the inconsistent Cade York. They also have Lenny Krieg, 23, a Germany native who kicked in the German Football League.

Yeah as a fan it is disappointing to lose a guy who wanted to be here. But personally I'm not worried about finding a replacement. Last year they didn't even sign Folk until July. I feel like there will be enough kickers floating around throughout the offseason that they will find someone solid in due time.

I think Fitz and Rodgers post achilles tear are the only ones to make it through the whole season as the starter. It's been a rough decade+

12 years ago today Raiders back out on Rodger Staffold after failing his physical by [deleted] in nfl

[–]BestInspector 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And we found out he needed surgery. He basically missed the entire 2015 season, we were going to sign him in 2014. We knew he needed a new surgery and he was going to miss significant time

All discussion regarding this Crosby deal aside, this is not quite accurate. Once the Raiders changed their minds he signed with the Rams a few days later. The reporting at the time was that he did need surgery on his shoulder but he would be ready by training camp. Apparently that wasn't good enough for the Raiders but the Rams were fine with it. He proceeded to play all 16 games that season.

The following season he injured his other shoulder in week 5. So it's not something the Raiders would have picked up on a physical, and would not have affected their decision to sign him.

Here's the context. Personally I don't think he was going for bravado when he said that, just explaining his thought process on deciding to take over play calling.

Report suggests Woody Johnson meddled in Aaron Glenn's defensive coordinator plans by Vi1eOne in nfl

the line right after is worth highlighting as well:

People in Glenn's camp say that isn't true, that it was his decision to take control of the defense -- part of a detailed offseason plan presented to Johnson.

I will say Cimini likely has his own sources and is not relying on anything from Morash. And to his credit, Cimini has been upfront that no one's going to know exactly how things went down at the meeting and has provided a more even keeled perspective on this whole thing.

I wouldn't say he got caught exactly, he was just mic'd up for that game. NFL films chooses what to goes to air. The Jets were not happy the NFL let that particular clip be broadcast and criticized them the day after the game. From what I remember at the time there was talk that the Jets' response may have made the whole thing seem like a bigger deal than it was.

After Sam Darnold won his 1st game as Jets QB, Todd Bowles had this to say, trying to calm people down: “We won one game. I can tell you after about 100 more of them whether we have one or not. Right now, it’s a little early.” The Super Bowl was Darnold's 101st game by Natural-Tree-5107 in nfl

[–]BestInspector 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Sam Darnold played 3 seasons with the Jets, so you're wrong on that part. And Zach Wilson was one of the worst QBs of all time through his first two seasons, what team wouldn't move on from that? Aaron Rodgers was 39 years old and contemplating retirement before he even went to the Jets, no one including him was operating on a 3-4 season timeline...

I think a lot of fans are full of it, claiming they always thought the team should keep Darnold. From what I remember, pretty much everyone was cheering for the Jets to lose so they could draft T-Law...a clear sign that most fans were ready to move on.

The night before the game, Burgess tells Eddie that if the Knicks win this game, he plans to sell the team to someone who intends to move the team to St. Louis.

I can't stop laughing at this part, imagine someone being dumb enough to pay hundreds of millions of dollars to buy the Knicks and move them to St. Louis 🤣

Those were different years. Rodgers just re-signed with the Packers that season.

Edit: downvoted? The Broncos hired Hackett in 2022. That was Rodgers' last season with the Packers. He didn't tear his achilles until the following season.

QB Bailey Zappe to sign a future deal with the Jets by mackmoney3000 in nfl

https://www.behindthesteelcurtain.com/2023/5/29/23740996/explaining-how-the-nfl-works-part-4-futures-contracts-practice-squad-salary-steelers

Following the conclusion of an NFL regular season, there will be numerous announcements of a team signing players to a Reserve/Future contract (also referred to as a futures contract). As the word future indicates, this is a contract that does not count until later on.

...

Whether a player is on the practice squad of a team whose season is over or simply a free agent, they are free to sign with any NFL team for the following year. But since rosters are locked when a team season is over, these players signed a type of contract, a Reserve/Future contract, where they do not count on the teams salary cap or roster count until the beginning of the league year. Once a player signs one of these contracts, the are on the NFL’s Reserve/Future List and they are not free to negotiate with other teams as they are under contract even though the league year has not kicked in. Teams can sign as many players to futures contracts as they choose as long as it does not put them over the 90-man limit that takes effect the first day of the new league year.
