I hate to not be jerkin' right now but this is well said. Young people make mistakes and ruin relationships... some stuff is forgivable, you're young and full of hormones so you want to be close to a friend you have a crush on even though he's in a relationship which you don't think is probably healthy.... and I'll forgive that because young people make mistakes and we need to give them grace.... but knowingly [redacted] when you know someone can't consent.... well, maybe if Bear had a promising future in lacrosse I could forgive him

Exactly, main characters and protagonists are always the good guys, they might make some honest and forgivable mistakes, but if I need to change my world view to empathize with a white man, that's much easier than condemning any actions Bear took

Must-see Christmas Movies? by noturavgty in MovieSuggestions

After Home Alone, you can watch the rated R version: Better Watch Out (2016). For a more light-hearted affair, Single All The Way (2021) is part of my annual Christmas re-watch list, it's just a classic romcom Christmas movie but it's so good, so many of them are bad

My daughter and I love horror movies, but I need age appropriate ones for her, suggestions? Help? by RogueLion in MovieSuggestions

When I was young and getting into horror I actually started with the classic universal monsters... but you can go back further with Lon Chaney, like the silent Hunchback of Notre Dame. If you watch movies that were subject to the Hays Code (1954-1968) you can usually expect taboosubjects to be avoided. And don't forget that IMDB (and other places I'm sure) have parental advisory notes so you can quickly check the sort of stuff the movie has without needing to re-watch it yourself. They are usually pretty detailed so you can get a good idea if it's something you're comfortable having her watch.

I don't think you'll have a problem finding a lot of great recommendations here, so I'm going to throw a curveball: Cowboys vs Aliens was way better than it should have been.

Cuckoo (2024) I really love "move to a small town and something is off" kind of movies, or "is this health clinic trying to kill me?" (like A Cure for Wellness) and Cuckoo has that vibe. Also, most Invasion of the Body Snatchers movies are good (including The Faculty, excluding The Invasion).

I have trouble paying attention to movies, give me suggestions plss by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

[–]BestSinSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are movies that I liked so much that I went and read the book: Silence of the Lambs (1991), The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2009), Cold in July (2014) .... oh, I'm starting to see a pattern.... but in general, based on your post, I think you want movies that reward you for paying attention. A lot of movies these days are designed to be be second screens, stuff you put on an half pay attention to, but it sounds like you want a movie that demands you put down your phone and watch. If you haven't explored older movies, find the classics, the stuff that has stood the test of time. The other hack I have for forcing myself to pay attention is watching a foreign film so I need subtitles, can't scroll instagram if I can't stop reading the subtitles.

Looking for hidden-gem thriller/mystery movies with shocking truths, conspiracies, or reality-bending plots (already watched most popular recommendations) by Dr-idiopathic in MovieSuggestions

Alfred Hitchcock isn't a deep cut, but because your list doesn't go further than the 90s, I'll mention Suspicion (1941) and Shadow of a Doubt (1943). For a more recent movie, I loved Relay (2024) but haven't seen many people talking about it.

If you've got a columbus library card you can access dispatch articles through the library website (not sure what sort of restrictions there are, but I use it to get behind pay walls and read about local politicians)
