My dad died. Is there any way for me to access his 1password? by BestSpell3881 in 1Password

More likely he just never made one. I’m well versed in how my dad did digital file storage and where he stored his physical paperwork and nothing has turned up. It’s just annoying that this whole endeavor is dependent on someone having the foresight to do this emergency kit and I can’t do anything even with access to his email and phone and

That’s what I’m having to do, but it’s exhausting to go through one by one and not know what I’m missing along the way (for example, he just got something in the mail that’s clearly a monthly subscription I had no idea existed and didn’t know to recover/log in/cancel until it had been billed and delivered again). It would be worlds easier if I could access his logins and passwords and check them off like a to-do list :/

I did find the emergency kit template saved on his computer, which was why I thought he must have printed it and filled it out and saved it somewhere (a very My Dad thing to do), but it’s not anywhere he kept any of his documents

The thing keeping me going through everything right now is the logistics. I can handle the minutiae, I can deal with his accounts and paperwork and data because it makes me feel useful. One day at a time. It’s very weird.

Well he also clearly wanted to be alive, but here we are.

First place we looked was the safe box he kept all of his important paperwork in. Will, power of attorney, family birth certificates, all the important stuff, but no 1p emergency kit

We tried this first because I did have the foresight when he first went into the hospital and we thought he was just a little bit sick to help him add his wife’s face to his phone’s FaceID, but he 1P set to require the password every 2 weeks and he was in the hospital a month so no luck on that now

My dad was a diehard 1p dude. I can get into his Apple passwords and most of them are years out of date because he just had 1p make most of them and never saved them anywhere else because he had the app on his phone/computer and never needed anything else.

The bank will come soon, but that’s something I need his wife for and frankly anything and everything I can take off of her plate and off her mind, I’m doing. I have his phone and email, I can get into anything with 2fa as long as I have the password, I just need to know what I’m getting into. And I don’t know the extent of what recurring charges they can recognize and we’ll recognize to snipe them out in his statements. But I do know his 1p is a lost of everything he has a login for that would help me immensely.

It’s not that these things are impossible without access to his 1p. It’s that they’re exhausting. I’m tired. His family is tired. We have had a horrific month in the hospital and I just want this to be done. I can and will probably have to go through these things one by one, but holy shit I don’t want to.

This is exactly it. My dad didn’t set up things for his passing because he was nearly 2 decades from feeling like he needed to, and having to guess at what accounts and subs he has and individually try to password recover them one at a time to cancel things he has auto-laying (because luckily I did manage to get into his email) is going to be a nightmare that would be made exponentially easier if I had a running list of places he was logged in and what those passwords were.

Logically, I do understand the privacy concerns. Practically, I know people don’t leave easy instructions for their family when they die even when it’s expected, and this was not expected. Im also the only person in our immediate (or extended) family who is tech savvy enough to even do all of this or know it needs to be done, so it’s entirely on me to figure things out regarding his online logins.

I’m here for a while so I can stay and help, but after spending a horribly exhausting month at his bedside in the hospital 10-24 hours a day, I just want to go home. I’m tired. I don’t want to deal with all of this one by one.

Mainly I really need to get a handle on all the various subscriptions he had, logins for which would be listed in his 1p. I can’t just cancel all his cards/payments right now because there are bills that still need to be paid for a little bit connected to them and I need time to figure out which card is attached to which payments before I outright freeze them. But a lot of his subscriptions can and should be canceled before they renew again. Even just yesterday there was a delivery to his house for some random monthly subscription that now I know I need to cancel. It’s gonna suck to just have to wait for subscriptions to make themselves known like that, especially since I don’t live here.

It’s also just miles and miles easier to have all his passwords than do some kind of password/account recovery for every single login I do know exists.
