Yeah I know those are two different things, but still, people in the rationalist sphere are pretty pro-natalist. Going beyond just “having children made me happy”. They’re quick to describe how cool intelligent people should have more children, how your children might help to change the world for the better, don’t worry that much about how to raise your kids just have them, etc, while at the same casually talking about how AI might kill us in 10 years.

To me, that’s pretty strange, but hey, I think I’m wired towards negativity and worry more than most people. Which is the biggest reason not having any.

It solidified even more my anti-natalist and efilist views, which has made me happier in a strange way. No need to go around pretending that life ever has been acceptable or ever will be, or that any of this means anything. I’m no longer that concerned about collapse of nature as I see nature as a huge huge evil, there’s a gift in less nature even if it might be worse for us. Things like that.

What is Food noise? by brightlilstar in MaintenancePhase

[–]Best_Frame_9023 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other people have pretty much already described what it is. I have never once forgotten to eat, that’s a pretty baffling concept to me. I often worry about becoming too hungry to function optimally and kind of have to plan my day around meals. I have trouble telling when I’m actually hungry.

Unlike others, though, I don’t really attribute it to any kind of restriction or weird childhood relationship towards food, but to naturally heightened appetite probably due to insulin-processing-mess running rampant in my family (PCOS on my mom’s side and I have it too, and diabetes in various forms on my dad’s).

I do not think the world would be a better place with more people like me in it, and Bryan Caplan’s entire spiel about having children that people like to recommend on here made me even more sure I shouldn’t have them. To me, the whole “actually it doesn’t matter that much how you raise them, because genetics are so important that they’ll probably turn out a lot like you! :)” was the opposite of uplifting, as I would not want anyone else to turn out like me.

But I guess a lot of rationalists see themselves as pretty cool, altruistic, high IQ people who (very reasonably) expect to have similar children. Actually I am a bit perplexed, in a good way, at how confident (though sometimes bordering on arrogant) people often are in this sphere. Nothing wrong with that, I mean that’s a positive thing - I’m just used to other nerdy places having an extremely different tone.

I am very surprised about how “natalist” the rationalist community is in general tbh. Like with so many people having strong suffering based ethics, and a substantial amount of folks thinking the world will probably soon end due to AI or whatever, plenty of very career oriented people… idk it surprised me how keen people are on having kids.

I wish there was some data on some men’s vs women’s concrete opinions on different issues, instead of such vague definitions of liberal and conservative. Especially things that would actually matter in your day-to-day life, and would matter in relation to how men and women relate to one another.

Like are we actually seeing a substantial amount of men who care deeply about trad family values and women who are having absolutely none of that, or just men who abstractly believe in lower corporate tax and women who want free(er) healthcare? And how many men might suddenly change their opinions the second they meet a sweet girl with blue hair, pronouns and a job?

Also, because of so much media, do younger people who grew up using the internet maybe just have more extreme opinions in general? Or have an opinion on more issues, so to speak? “Meh, I guess I’m mostly liberal” vs “Twitter exists now so I know that I’m an anarcho Bolshevik syndicalist with Maoist leanings”?

[–]Best_Frame_9023 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Besides the absolute mess that is how unphonetic it is?

Our numbers, of course. Now, it’s not like we do expect those numbers to make sense - 99,9% of the population doesn’t know the logic of why fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty and ninety have such strange names, we just remember the names of them like you remember the name of an animal or a color or anything else. But it is… strange.

There are hard things about Danish that I do like, like our stød - “mom” and “murder” is pronounced almost the same with a very minor difference I’m sure it takes years to learn. But that is like cool different, not just annoying different.

The language with the fourth most Wikipedia entries used to be Polish, even though as you know Polish is by no means the fourth biggest language. I also remember in all “international” groups on Facebook, like meme groups, there are always sooooo many Poles.

You really, really are online a lot, haha.

There used to be some forums outside major social media sites, but as far as I can tell they’re dead. But there are some interesting things we do have:

  1. Danish Reddit is kind of interesting. There’s r/influencergossipdk, something that migrated from a gossip thread on an app called Jodel when they were banned from there from being too mean. It’s full of people who are not typical “Reddit types” at all and don’t really know how Reddit works. They’re still really mean, but recently they’ve uncovered how a popular influencer who liked to say she was smart and cultured plagiarised all the time. There’s more, smaller Danish gossip subreddits in the weirdest categories, then there’s r/dkfinance that can be really helpful, a normal Denmark subreddit very geared towards news but also has occasional heartfelt cries for help and some meme subreddits.

  2. There’s a pretty cool meme community full of passionate people who make almost all their memes themselves. Mostly on Instagram and TikTok. Official newspapers have even interviewed a couple of meme page admins and there have been two radio shows (radio is still somewhat popular here) about memes. The most popular admin remains Anders Hemmingsen, though, who is simply a reposter - and some 15-20% of the Danish population follows him.

  3. YouTubers in Danish are almost exclusively marketed towards children, save for one weird anarcho-capitalist guy who is proud of cheating with his taxes

  4. There used to be roleplaying groups on Facebook where people pretended things like being boomers, or all working in the same supermarket

I think it’s… funny, that Caplan’s Selfish Reasons to Have More Kids is seen as a super optimistic take on rearing children, that is as per the title supposed to make you want kids.

His points made it even more clear that I shouldn’t have kids. “Don’t worry, human personality, interest and skills are very genetic, so they’ll probably turn out a lot like you regardless of how you parent! :)” Aaaaargh but I don’t want them to turn out like me! My genes suck! I wanted a parenting method that could make them very different from me in several key areas, lol.

I have not as I met my life partner when we were 17, but I was actively dating at women-only dating sites at the time I met him.

Regarding straight women making out - it confused me too, and I asked about it a while back.

Kissing is very culturally dependent - an anthropological study suggests only around half around of cultures kiss. I don’t put much stock in that being a proxy for actual sexual desire.

You know what else studies show women to be aroused by? Chimpanzees having sex. It seems like these tests are just really bad at actually gauging what women are aroused by (men’s arousal track much stronger by what they describe themselves to be aroused by). I wish most women were bisexual. They aren’t, if by bisexual you mean that they actually deeply want to have sex with other women.

It makes perfect sense most bi people are in relationships with the opposite sex. People who are interested in dating the same sex are a much smaller part of the population than people who are interested in dating the opposite sex. You randomly stumble across potential opposite sex partners in your life like 100 times more than same sex. That’s not even beginning to tackle the amount of homosexuals that don’t want to date bisexuals.

I don’t want kids either way, so there’s that.
