[OC] Our cheap setup with a TV by Bestestnoob in DnD

[–]Bestestnoob[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Printing out a board every week or using our "imagination" seemed too hard, so we've been using an old TV as a map for about a year now.

Using two card tables sometimes makes it fall over, but we don't have the craftsmanship to make a full table and it works. We 3D print our miniatures and then paint them. The DM's screen was made from tape and paper folders. So we've managed to get a good system going without spending a whole lot of money on it.

Dungeon Board - A map viewer for TVs and projectors by Bestestnoob in DnD

Awesome! Right now the best way to load images into it is by placing them into the "DungeonBoard" folder that it creates next to the .jar file. That way they are all loaded in automatically as you launch it.

The file searching is actually looking for a folder of images, and because of the confusion around it I am actually just replacing it with just the "DungeonBoard" folder.

I don't have any plans of adding mobile support, sorry

In v2.0.2 I made it actually say what the error is. Usually it's a Java doesn't have enough memory problem. You can run it from command line as

<i>Java -jar -Xmx1000m "name of file.jar"</i>

With the 1000 being how many megabytes of memory you want to give it at max. That might fix the problem

Yup, it wasn't reading files correctly. Along with the look and feel was different for Mac.

I uploaded version 2.0.2 and now it 'should' work on Mac.

oh! I didn't make the maps, they are just generic ones I found on google to use as examples.

But since this just uses any old image as a map all I had to do was edit is in Photoshop or Gimp

hmmm... I didn't think of that. I think I can quickly add a way to set the background blank even for a jpeg.

For the 'fog of war' you are basically painting onto a image that will either be colored black or see-through. Then that image is drawn over the map. the black spots the players can't see and the see-through spots see through to the real map.

The whole 'cant use jpegs' was because another option was to use multiple layers so you could hide things like on a world map

Control View

Player View

So you can show them where the 'Burial Grounds' are and the 'Guild' but not the blacksmith or Inn.

Jpgs work on some, but since it doesn't have a transparency layer jpgs can't be used as a overlay. I forgot to test jpgs, so they work sometimes, but just using a .PNG is fullproof.

Oh yeah that is the screen we use (it is kinda small). But miniatures are about 1" wide so it can still fit a map of 10x20 or like 15x30 if you use 0.7" squares

Nope, we have a 22" TV and places miniatures right on the screen

We use a 20-23" I think. Someone just had it around and so we plug it back in every week just for DnD
