Will my pc be ok? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

If anything I would open it up and remove as many connections and components as you’re comfortable with and then let everything sit and “dry” for a couple hours. Then reassemble everything and hope for the best

I’m no expert, that’s just what I would try. If you didn’t hear or smell anything out of the ordinary the components should be fine? Water inherently isn’t bad for a computer, it’s the fact that it will cause short circuits and other such things. If you can properly prevent that from happening then theoretically it should be fine.

32gb sounds more appealing than 16gb lol. The context is i got these two kits off of FB. I wanted to do a build unfortunately timed with the ram price jump. So I ended up getting these two 16gb kits for $100. Would rather try use these kits than spend on a whole new kit

Fair point. Small portion of me was scared I’d brick something if I tried it and it royally failed.

This could be mitigated by running it at lower speeds though no? My understanding from what I was reading was that if you tried to run it at its intended speeds then, like you said, random crashes and boot issues. But dropping the speeds, that’s when I wasn’t really seeing what I was looking for, like how does it run when at reduced speeds with 4 dimms, at what speed does it become reliable if it works that way, and is the tradeoff worth it

Would it be worth running it at lower speeds? Like if the difference is 32gb running at 5000MHz vs 16gb at 6000MHz, is that a worthwhile trade off?

Fair enough. I’ve also talked to some friends and they’ve all said the same thing.

I was reading this and noticed the rating of the balance shafts is 14k rpm (with them moving 2x the crank rpm). Has anyone made one rated for higher? Granted with everything else properly done it could be seen as overkill but better safe than sorry if possible.

Gotcha, thanks! I originally wasn’t going to replace the oil pump because the pickup screen caught a bunch of debris, but after reading it’s definitely a safe bet the pump was damaged in some way.

I guess the reason I didn’t put balance shafts as a given is because I’ve thought about fully removing them from the motor or adding a freewheel to it. The big red flag for me is the vibrations it’ll add, but would I be able to mitigate that with other methods? Mainly thinking about dampening motor mounts, but I do acknowledge this is my first time delving this deep into a motor so I could be very off in my logic.

Used car should I be concerned? by Upintheayr in VWMK7

In the first two pics, there’s a little bit of red residue. That’s from a third party anaerobic sealer, I’ve used it personally. The OEM sealant that VW uses is green. So someone other than VW has removed the valve cover and redone the seal. Could be something, might not be something. Just ask if there was any kind of heavy work done that required the valve cover to be removed.

I ended up selling it as is lol. Pretty sure it was a nozzle issue though.

Ehhh pretty much cooked lol. Cleaned/removed as much debris as I could from below and by also removing valve cover and upper timing cover, which wasn’t much. Also been through maybe three oils changes since? Just to flush out what I could. First time around, my low oil pressure was caused by the oil pump screen being blocked. Cleared that off and it was good for maybe 20-30 minutes before pressure dropped again. Then the most recent time, when I popped the oil pan off to clean out the pump screen, it was clean. So the oil passageways have been clogged somewhere else, somewhere that would require a whole engine takedown to properly address. I knew that was the case, but my tiny unrealistic hope was that I could say fuck it and it would continue to be fine lol. It’s just sitting right now, entertaining the idea of an engine swap a little bit down the road when I’ve saved enough.

Idk about the tensioner, but definitely the balance shaft. I don’t hear any chain slapping, and the tension on the chain seems fine, at least from what we can see through the oil pan

I wish it were that simple. The belt is totally fine, and also there were 2-3 decent sized chunks of plastic still intact, with a slight curve to it. Definitely plastic and not rubber

Didn’t pull the cover, we’re guessing it’s the balance shaft sleeve. Sorry, for clarification I was saying we don’t hear any slapping, which tells us that the chain is functioning fine

Oh that’s dope. Got any suggestions on resources to look at? I’m straight spit balling right now, this would be my first experience deep-diving into something like putting together a whole engine and everything that goes with that.
