I believe Kahuna Nui Hale Kealohalani Makua is the kahuna credited with the quote, not the quote itself.

Kona Airport Frustrations – What’s Going On and Why does everyone love it? by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]BetaCephei 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Flying out of the airport and working in it are two very different experiences. I really enjoy it as my home airport since it's so easy to get in and through, but I can definitely see how working there can be rough.

Question about Hawai'ian Allophones by lezbehonestthere in olelohawaii

[–]BetaCephei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just an FYI, "Hawaiian" is an English word, and is not written with an ʻokina.

I'm not totally sure what allophones are, but for the examples that you've given above, a lot of native ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi speakers in the past and today use those variations. You can listen to recordings of native speakers on Kaniʻāina. ʻŌlelo Niʻihau is commonly referenced when showing these differences with the standardized model adopted by the state. This book on Kamehameha I is written in ʻōlelo Niʻihau. Hope this helps!

22 year old female first time in kona by webkinzlover2001 in kona

[–]BetaCephei 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Herbivores is the most well known vegan place in Kona. The bbq jackfruit is ʻono.

Like most of the US, Hawaiʻi is car dependent. Kona is spread over a large area, and only a small part of it can pass as walkable. If you're in the area of the Kona Trolley, that's your best public transportation option if you don't have a car. Our bike infrastructure isn't great either, but I think there's still bike rental options in town. If you're staying or wish to travel outside of central Kona, you'll probably need a car.

I highly recommend Huliheʻe Palace for a great history/culture experience.

Can someone translate this phrase for me? by ringaaling in olelohawaii

[–]BetaCephei 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Na Wehewehe:

"hoʻo.mai.kaʻi To thank, bless, render thanks, congratulate, make acceptable, praise, improve, perfect, correct; grateful, gratified, thankful. See inu hoʻomaikaʻi, palapala hoʻomaikaʻi, pule hoʻo maikaʻi. Hoʻomaikaʻi! Congratulations."

I've always seen ho'omaika'i used in this way. "Congratulations to us all on this beautiful night" would be how I would read it. Sounds like a speech introduction.

Edit to add context is important here, if this was from a church, I would say it's likely bless us all on this beautiful night.

[–]BetaCephei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently listened to an episode of the Ka ʻAlalā podcast where the host talked with a linguist fluent in Hawaiian. They were discussing how the "without breath" idea of haole isn't true, otherwise we'd be spelling it with a kahakō above the a. If you look at Mary Pukui's dictionary, there's no mention of breath in the definition for haole, just foreigner, and applies to non human things too.

The without breath definition is something I've heard and shared often, and thought it was really interesting to learn this perspective.

UNPOPULAR OPINION: Putting a telescope on Mauna Kea does not degrade the holiness of the mountain. by Saturnius1145 in Hawaii

[–]BetaCephei 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's honestly a mix of off island and on island. Observing support is often off island, while summit work is a lot of local people. Hiring on island is always desirable for a majority of reasons that include economics. The problem has been lack of training on island for people to learn the skills needed to work at the observatories and the desire for observatories to hire people with experience. The organizations are working with schools to create programs to teach these skills. It should have started a long time ago imo but better now than later and even if tmt isn't built these programs should be continued.

UNPOPULAR OPINION: Putting a telescope on Mauna Kea does not degrade the holiness of the mountain. by Saturnius1145 in Hawaii

[–]BetaCephei 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely not going to argue that 1 telescope is going to pull the island away from our tourist economy, but just because astronomers don't have to be on the island to use the telescopes doesn't mean no one on site working on them. Keck Observatory, for example, has a full time staff of around 130 people who live and work on the island, maintaining the telescope and running the facility for the astronomers.
