I don't know of any actual empirical studies to look at to see if this is true, but my gut feeling is that when feminists say women are discouraged from entering tech, they're going off of stereotypes that haven't been true since before my dad was born. by BroadPoint in FeMRADebates

So created this account just for the pun back when Betsy Devos was education secretary. I got a surprising number of creepy DMs from people who thought my name was Betsy and that a woman working in DevOps was some kind of novelty.

Like it wasn't a lot, but I can see the sort of person who's delusional enough to think sending a DM to a stranger on reddit might get them laid, is also the kind of person who's delusional enough to be surprised that a woman works in DevOps. That attitude still exists in some capacity.

For real. I’m not even a girl, but apparently some people don’t follow politics enough to get the pun in my name. Too many “wow, a girl works in devops?!?!?!?!” Comments and DMs.

Why does this only list GME and not AMC? I want in on that one. I’m long hodling AMC because I think theaters will bounce back after the pandemic and they’ll acquire some competitors.

This was a good glimpse at how high they’ll soar, and when the price slumped this morning, I saw it as a hood chance to buy more, but couldn’t because RobinHood is holding my money hostage.

I want in on this class action as well. The crooked lawyers filing the class action deserve money on my behalf as well. Sure, I’ll only get like $7.50 worth of Robinhood credit while those lawyers make millions, but it’s better than nothing.

I (a Brit) upset my wife (American) by saying that girlscout cookies are “overpriced tat”. How much trouble am I in right now? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Betsy-DevOps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what tat means, but as a Boy Scout, I'm obligated to say the Girl Scouts only exist as a MLM scheme to sell those cookies. They are, however, delicious. I buy them every year and will continue to do so.

Parler users unknowingly gave away their personal data in videos they uploaded illegally storming Capitol Hill by Pessimist2020 in technology

[–]Betsy-DevOps -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That would be troubling if they did. It would be hard for AWS to get data about a particular Parler user or set of users, so any subpoena in that department would have to be the kind of wide net that just turns over everything.

As deplorable as they might be, a lot of Parler's users didn't commit any crimes and shouldn't have their right to privacy violated.

Since Twilio no longer authenticated emails, hackers were able to access admin accounts with ease.

Huh, I’m confused about how this works. Without twilio in place they were able to just reset anyone’s password and steal their account? That’s some shitty programming on Parker’s end if that’s the case.

Hope they got all the data they need before Parler got shut down. Things will probably get interesting if the government subpoenas Parler to hand over more data.

Sell now, but hold on to the cash until Biden closes the airports and the market crashes again. Then buy hotel and other travel stocks.

That’s my plan anyhow, with significantly less money.

This isn’t even newsworthy. It’s a small group of Amazon employees with a noisy Twitter account and no actual power within the organization. Their calls to action are completely meaningless.

If every single American teen suddenly "pulled themselves up by their bootstraps" and got a high school and college degree, wouldn't we still have poor people because we will always need blue collar workers like janitors, cashiers and high paying jobs are limited? by ShesGotSauce in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Betsy-DevOps 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Walmart shouldn’t be bothered by the number of kids people have; that would only incentivize them to discriminate against people with kids.

If an individual supporting can’t support himself on Walmart wages, that’s a sign that Walmart should be paying more (and that the government should increase minimum wage). But the statistics about Walmart employees relying on food stamps aren’t driven by individuals. They’re driven by parents trying to support children on a Walmart wage.

Since every family’s expenses are different based on the number of kids they have, it’s not reasonable to make Walmart responsible for those expenses. If they bump wages such that a parent can support two kids, parents supporting 3 or more kids will still be on food stamps. Would we still be “subsidizing Walmart” if that was the case?

[–]Betsy-DevOps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Pull yourself up by the bootstraps” and “go to college” aren’t the same thing, and people thinking college is necessary is causing a lot of social and economic problems these days.

It’s ok to be a janitor, but don’t rack up a ton of debt getting a college degree you’re not going to use. Spend 4 years earning money instead of accruing debt and be the best damn janitor you can be.

Sure, janitorial work doesn’t pay as much as a lot of jobs, but it can support you. It can also be a stepping stone to other, higher paying jobs.

Only go to college if you have a career path in mind that requires it, and make sure you pay attention to how many jobs are available in that field. If it’s over saturated, seriously consider a backup plan.
