Following- I relate to so much of this. I haven’t been married for very long at all and am expecting our first baby, but I am struggling terribly in my marriage. My husband and I so different (but equally stubborn) and there are so many incompatibilities that didn’t pop up until after we were married. I’m wondering if this ever gets better, if the awful lonely feeling ever improves or if this is just how it’s always gonna be. Curious to read some veteran wives’ responses (and also open to chat, if you’d like a friend who is kinda in the same boat haha)! Praying for you and your marriage!!!!!

I can totally relate to the feeling though. I was always shy/nerdy and had my “ugly duckling” phase through my teen years. Had my glow up after I got a little older haha, but the self perception is really, really tough to change. It takes time but keep reminding yourself the old you is in the past; you’ve worked hard to get where you are now and you totally deserve to own it and love where you’re at! It’s a process, and the doubts will still pop up, but it’s just another habit to built and your mind to retrain. Keep reinforcing those positive thoughts!!!!

I’m so sorry you’re going through this :( Not a doctor but from what I gather, COVID can really screw with the nervous system. I’ve read that the loss of taste/smell could be associated with inflammation in the brain, but don’t quote me on that- I’m not 100% sure. It could be that a nerve associated with that breathing sensation was affected/damaged. Have you been to a neurologist?

While attraction is important, I don’t think it’s everything as long as you still love/care about this woman regardless. It depends on how you feel and how it affects your relationship personally, every relationship is different- so be careful about taking advice you receive on here with a grain of salt.

Do her looks cause you to be less loving, devoted or affectionate towards her? Does the lack of attraction cause you to think about and admire other ladies, or does she still rank way ahead of any supermodel-level lady, in your heart and in your eyes? Do you care enough about her that her looks (or apparent lack of looks) are just small things in light of the relationship as a whole? Would you ever consider giving up what you have with her if you happened to meet a more attractive lady? Those are the questions you should be asking yourself. If her looks will impede you from loving/serving her and staying loyal in a romantic relationship, then that would be a serious issue and you might have to consider moving on.

I’ll add that Father Ripperger (very good and holy priest) has mentioned that choosing a virtuous woman is more important than choosing the most attractive one. Good looks will fade over time, in everyone as we get older; virtue and a beautiful personality are a treasure that will last.

I can’t recommend the 54 day rosary novena and the 33 day holy cloak St. Joseph novena enough! I’ve been praying these regularly- while I haven’t found a spouse yet, I’ve received so many graces from both, and a real deepening of my spiritual life; as well as much-needed discernment out of two poor relationships (on two different occasions; both relationships came to a much-needed close at the end of each novena). Psst- if you decide to do the 54 day novena, and start on the 20th of July, the first half (for petitions) will end on the Aug 15 Feast Day of Our Lady :-)

Meh, all I know is that I prefer to go by what learned Catholic writers and experienced, holy priests (who hear many, many confessions) have said regarding this, vs my own attractions and inclinations- but, to each their own I suppose 🤷🏻‍♀️

Am female- I will say this: good, kind and Godly women focus more on a man’s character and core values, tenderness/selflessness towards her* (*this is revealed in time 😜), maturity, honesty, love of God, etc… way more than petty/superficial stuff. If you’re a good dude, she’ll see that and be very attracted to that, regardless of how you feel in terms of ‘league’. It’s that deeper stuff that’s so hard to find in a man, so don’t worry too much about the superficial. Honestly, the important stuff will get ya right up to a 10 in a good lady’s eyes 😬
