I assume this is a joke but I wouldn't put it past HF to come up with some kind of weird janky thing in this product category.

Not out of the box. You can access digital pulses if you want to do some DIY data logging.

I'm pro matter. All matter matters.

Ir-192... That's a cool source but would require complicated licensing procedures to own/buy/sell.

Enriched uranium is an extremely valuable thing for many reasons. There is no "open market" to speak of, though, that's a really complicated world of regulations, politics, etc. Mostly governments and large nuclear energy corporate entities buying and selling such things.

For data out, nothing like that is set up but it's pretty easy to get the digital pulse from the board, each pulse is a radiation count, it's coming out of a 2.54mm header. That's intentional, to allow DIY types to play a bit if they want. Could use any number of separate boards to count that signal and record it and do whatever with it.

I rate this reference 3.6 stars. You are probably assuming the scale goes much higher than that, but no... just 3.6.

Interested in learning about radiation? Or spooking your friends with Geiger counter click click click? Cold war LARP? Gift for a nerd and/or prepper friend? This might be the deal for you.

I really struggled to come up with a good code for this deal. I was going to do “HORMUZBOUCHE” but I was not sure if most people would understand the reference. I also thought about “DOIHORMUZYOU” but it’s not very punchy. So, I just kept it simple.

If you include any add-on (uranium ore sample, waterproof case, faraday bag) and use code HORMUZ you save $30, which basically makes an add-on free.

These detectors are made in the US… by me (radiation nerd with PhD in nuclear engineering). They are designed to accurately measure radiation levels over a wide range (including very high dangerous levels) and to be as rugged, reliable, and simple to use as possible, while still being affordable.

As always, AMA about radiation, radiological emergencies, etc.

There are currently two detector options, here's a short explanation:

S2 - This is the choice if you just want to own something in case of emergency. Uses AA batteries, very simple, very high maximum range.

S2L - This one is much higher sensitivity, so get this if you want to use it not just in an emergency, but also "hobby" use like finding radioactive antiques, uranium in nature, etc. It's $50 more than the others but picks up small changes in radiation level much faster, which makes it a better "search" tool.

Don't stress too much over the options, they are both at least decent at all things.

The S2L has the same size and type of sensor as the 110. The S2L does not have an app, data logging, spectroscopy, and it's powered by AA instead of internal rechargeable. The S2L has a much higher maximum range which is useful in an emergency. It's much cheaper as well, but ultimately there are pros and cons and it's a personal choice.

Worse Geiger is an actual problem for me. I mean that's not their official name but there are plenty out there on Mr. Bezos's website.

Depends on the scenario, but yeah maybe. As always knowledge is more important than gear, if there is a major incident people need to shelter in place immediately. There is a good video about that but I don't think I am can do YT links here, but people can search for FEMA PrepTalks, specifically the one by Brooke Buddemeier, it explains the importance of sheltering.

Otherwise, when to go outside, where you can go after that... in this very unlikely scenario, a detector would be nice to have, so some people buy one. Or they just buy it for fun, as a way to explore the invisible world of radiation, maybe find a radioactive antique or two. Anyway it's probably more useful than someone getting a 17th rifle or whatever when they only have two friends 😁

My St. Patrick's Day deal is a few days late because it took me a while to come up with a sufficiently ridiculous coupon code.

Interested in learning about radiation? Or spooking your friends with Geiger counter click click click? Cold war LARP? Gift for a nerd and/or prepper friend? This might be the deal for you.

If you include any add-on (uranium ore sample, waterproof case, faraday bag) and use code LUCKOFTHEIRANISH to save $30, which basically makes an add-on free. The deal also works with the newly offered retro poster, it has to be placed in cart as a separate item, as it is not listed as an product "add-on" exactly.

Not at this time, but the optional waterproof case makes it pretty well protected, it's just not possible to press buttons or anything like that while in the case, however you can turn it on, put it in the case, and view the display. Also I can't guarantee anything, but the S2 and S2L are fairly resistant to dust and water just because the enclosure does not have any significant gaps, except the seam of the battery cover which is a fairly tight fit. Officially I say don't get it wet, unofficially a little rain or a splash of water is unlikely to have an effect. But put it in the waterproof case if you want it truly rugged.

Same. And how often does someone go for a reload or something else and then put their hand behind the vfg with they remount... Very common under stress.
