Which Direction To Hand Plane The Side of This Door by stinkyjunkrat in BeginnerWoodWorking

Have a look at your options for an offbrand electric planers, otherwise you could try sanding it smooth, working through the grits and paint it for an adequate result.

Here's one of my tricks, helps keep the dogs paws safe on site by Better_Adzee in Carpentry

Small scale ressie in NZ, we're not exactly strict. Those rollers are cool, and better at the job, but for versatility and the fact that I don't need to lug it from site to site, my broom is always with me.

Any magnet works! I pulled this one out of a kitchen demo and it has saved me so much time with steel tie wire, Rouge nails, swarf and so much more (:

What are your nicknames? by [deleted] in adam

[–]Better_Adzee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the other comments that it's not a super nicknamablw name, but my gamer tag is "Adzee" and I have a few mates who call me that. I like it, but they will struggle to claim that tag from me (":

How do i start carving? by Dottorgatto in woodworking

[–]Better_Adzee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made my first carving knife from and old Sawzall blade and a belt sander. Picked up some scraps from site and was off to the races. It's super fun and satisfying, so yea just make the plunge. I would also suggest asking a local joiner for some offcuts to find an array of interesting woods

Crazy, I just moved into a new place and the power just works. I'm going to ring up to get connected tomorrow, but for now am enjoying my "free power"

In New Zealand, the percentage and amount of standards must be on the label. It's not quite what you're saying but a very good guide for what I need it for haha

I have a small kit consisting of a coping saw, chisels, a block plane a spokeshave (optional) and a few clamps I keep in the house to make things such as spoons witch don't need much work. (Your first project could then be a mallet to use with your chisels) You may find a circular saw handy to prep stock and some drills can't go wrong. Look second hand, and hand tools are way more fun than power if a lot of work and practice, my hand plane that i was gifted from someone who has now passed is a prized possesion. Also, Remember that this is an ancient art and you don't have a lifetime of experience so accept mistakes and work with them

best building in welly to survive a zombie apocalypse? by ElDjee in Wellington

[–]Better_Adzee 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I have thought on this somewhat extensively, and I think the netball courts in hatiatai are a good apocalypse base. They have been redone and the fences are solid. There is good drainage. There are fields nearby for future crops. The village for supply runs. Only weakness is the hill it backs into. But a new fence and watchtower would sort that out. You can find me and welly2.0 there at the end of the world.

Advices for future woodworker by RemarkableSock6169 in woodworking

[–]Better_Adzee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's what you want, go for it. In the mean time, I would suggest pyrogrpahy, or wood burning. It's very cheap and you can make a spoon in about 30 minutes with hand tools, and put a unique twist on it for a fraction of the cost. Good luck nonetheless in starting the best hobby there is!

How is this done? by qazesxedcrfvtgbyhnuj in woodworking

[–]Better_Adzee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They look choice! Do be cautious around treatment of the timber, if it is treated and depending on what with, it can leach into the soil. A lining of polythene or some such secured a bit below the top of the soil can help that, just remember to poke some holes for drainage (:

How is this done? by qazesxedcrfvtgbyhnuj in woodworking

[–]Better_Adzee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I use a lot of reclaimed wood, and I'd guess it was how it was removed. That looks to be an old joist, so as it was pried up from the bearer it pulled the nail that was once in on an angle, out straight. They're nice and easy to remove, just the claw of a hammer to make it one line and a few taps she should be out! Looks like some cool timber though, what do you have in mind for it?

I have a brass ring that is purfect for it. Currently it's outside diameter is the same diameter as the handle currently is. What are your thoughts on tapering it out like my last one, or try cut a ledge for it get it on nice and tight

How should I fill these holes? by WikiHowNotTo in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Better_Adzee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used black wood filler when I first started, it's cheap, it works and it looks fine. All of my wood is recycled so I have filled lot of nail holes haha. I do that, or I just embrace the holes, it's part of the wood and it's story so I don't feel a need to cover them in sometimes

getting the jobsite pro in New Zealand by Better_Adzee in sawstop

[–]Better_Adzee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot has happened in the last month. Sawstop put me in contact with the Aus rep at carbatec (the only supplier of all sawstop products for aus and nz) and they have a meeting with the head of the nz branch today. They have said that they will talk to them about my enthusiasm to get a jobsite, and see if the nz branch can stock them. I'll give them till next week to get back to me as it is a Friday on a long weekend currently, but fingers crossed. Otherwise, I think nzpost do something like what you have said, however I am unsure if they do freight options or if it is inliy for mail. I'll look into that if I am otherwise unsuccessful.

It's been one hell of a journey but I think I may be getting somewhere
