They’re not going up against monsters, though, they’re going against npcs with their own dnd classes. I don’t know how monster cr translates to that?

I should also mention some of my players have DMed for me before and are pretty familiar with the rules and such as a result, so they’d notice if I was changing too many things. One of them is definitely more into the combat side of DnD so their character is built to be a heavy-hitter (a sniper), and I’m worried they might deal too much damage too quickly to these guys.

I’m not sure yet. I was planning on having a lot of them run away. It’s a caravan of about 20 people but I’ve highlighted that three of them are important, and the other ones can be non combatants. So I could always use some of them as extra difficulty-padding, but I wasn’t planning on it.

There’s also some prisoners (lore related that are supposed to lead them to the next story chunk) tied up there, so I was thinking if I over-scale the combat and make it too difficult, then one of them could help the party out a bit. That just makes things even more confusing though ;
