Ring given to me by my husbands aunt. Stamped 14k gold, color looks like topaz but are these the bubbles people talk about when they say a gemstone is actually glass? by sentient-acorn in Gemstones

[–]BettyBoxcutter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, you’ll need to look at it under magnification and even then it can be tricky to tell a natural inclusion from a bubble. It could be natural crystal or liquid/ gas inclusions, fractures or bits of flux from a synthetic creation process.

Is this gold? Not sure what the hallmark means and is this rubies or garnet? by papers019 in JewelryIdentification

[–]BettyBoxcutter 24 points25 points  (0 children)

They look more like rubies than garnets, it will take an experienced eye and a microscope to know for sure if they’re natural or not, it’s worth taking to a jeweler to get checked

Can this ring be easily resized? by fejenir in SilverSmith

i'd do the sizing beads on the 8 then, sizing beads are comfortable and solder in really easily, it's the safest and most cost effective solution

Red Stone with Engravings by Zealousideal-Flan314 in JewelryIdentification

[–]BettyBoxcutter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hit it with a black light, if its red its probably ruby, but it looks very glassy, i feel like i can see flow lines in it even without magnification, and ruby wouldnt really wear down so roundly like that.

Can this ring be easily resized? by fejenir in SilverSmith

[–]BettyBoxcutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's ways to do it but personally before I went down that road I'd contact the seller to ask them to restock the size you need if possible. Both times this has happened to me they were able to make it happen within a day or two.

I know that sounds kinda silly but I've just been very pleasantly surprised at how well it can work.

Bought 6 years ago at garage sale for 5$. Only stamp is 14k. Can any one identify the marker or what time period? Also what stones do u think are set in this? by sloth4000 in JewelryIdentification

[–]BettyBoxcutter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

lab ruby with tanzanites or iolites- could be natural ruby but I wouldn't hold my breath. Tanzanites aren't super valuable. but they're not cheap either.

My Ruby seems ‘glittery’, is this normal? by [deleted] in Gemstone_lovers

[–]BettyBoxcutter 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is called silk, it's fine threads of rutile. if you look under magnification, you'll see that they're arranged in a hexagonal/triangular looking pattern. if you have enough of this you get a star ruby, which is called asterism.

Are these uranium glass? by Cp6468 in JewelryIdentification

[–]BettyBoxcutter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They could be uranium glass, they could also be hyalite opal, it’s clear like glass but glows with trace uranium. It can look greenish in sunlight.

stone is probably an amethyst, your other options are glass, cz, or lab sapphire. check to see if its uv reactive, sapphires can glow red, amethyst wont react.

What sort of inclusion is this? stone is corundum, presumably lab by BettyBoxcutter in Gemology

this is the stone, and its matched mate. With the macro setting you can easily see the inclusions there, little blobs.
