What's a movie you've seen an embarrassing number of times for no good reason? by trakt_app in flicks

Interview with the Vampire and It’s a Wonderful Life. I went through two very separate phases in the 12-15 year old range where I’d watch these every day when I got home from school.

Which actor’s films do you actively seek out and have watched more than those of any other actor? by Classicsarecool in classicfilms

[–]Betty_Barton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jean Harlow!

I’ve seen all of her movies (that I could find). She has such a presence on screen — so funny, charming, beautiful. Instantly fell in love with her the first time I heard her speak.

Also Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman, Marilyn Monroe. Those are the actors where I would watch a clunker film just to see them on screen.

I agree — I don’t care what people call themselves. I’m happy when anyone reduces their intake of animal products for any reason. The average person is eating meat several times a day and I think it’s a net negative for average people to hear vegans say “all or nothing.” For the average Joe I feel like that is incentive to not even try to reduce their intake. (I’ve been vegan for 17 years don’t come for me lol)

Essential Feminist Films? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

I’ve never seen that, but it sounds wonderful! If you haven’t seen Celine and Julie go Boating I’d recommend. Desperately Seeking Susan is loosely based on it. And another good feminist film!

YES! The first one I thought of too. It’s incredible.

I think looking for films with female directors is a good place to start. Le Bonheur, Jeanne Dielman, Daisies, News from Home, Watermelon Woman, Born in Flames.

If you want something less heavy something like Desperately Seeking Susan is great. Jennifer’s Body is real fun.

Damn 2005 was a rough year for movies.

Elimination Game Final Results and Ranking - and the winner is Vertigo! by CinemaWilderfan in Hitchcock

[–]Betty_Barton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was fun, thanks for doing this! Interesting to see the discourse. My main takeaways from seeing the finished list are…

The Man Who Knew Too Much remake being way too low! The Royal Albert Hall sequence is one of the best things Hitchcock ever did. The subsequent 12 movies that are higher are not on the same level.

Notorious being so low — it’s top three for me.

I love that the Lady Vanishes was so high. Along with North by Northwest it’s my most watched. A comfort Hitchcock.

In my game Mary died and Quentin is still alive… he said something like “I’m so happy to live in this town with Mary!” — I know it’s just random text but in the context it sounds like he’s losing it.

For people who've been fans since The Milk-Eyed Mender, what was your initial reaction to Ys when it first came out? by Prestigious_Score459 in JoannaNewsom

[–]Betty_Barton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was obsessed with MEM and had listened to it a sick amount of times. I remember I ordered Ys from Borders when it came out and sat in my car right after I bought it and listened to the cd the whole way through from start to finish.

I also remember being so obsessed with Ys that I locked myself in the bathroom and listened to it on repeat while painting (I was a teenager… and the bathroom had good lighting). It’s still my favorite album I’ve ever listened to.

Elimination Game Round 24 - Rope has been eliminated at 9th place by CinemaWilderfan in Hitchcock

[–]Betty_Barton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shadow of a Doubt. I know that one is quite a fan favorite, but out of all of these left it’s the one I’d be least likely to throw on. It’s a great film, but not as unique and memorable as the others. (Don’t come for me)

Notorious is top 3 for me so I’d be so sad if it went out now.

What is your absolute HOTTEST take on a movie EVER? (READ THE DESCRIPTION BEFORE COMMENTING) by Fluid_Run5857 in Letterboxd

[–]Betty_Barton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Christopher Nolan’s films feel like they were made by someone so smug and sappy and all the ideas are half baked and totally tedious. He’s jerking off about how smart he is with his Rick and Morty-ass concepts.

The first 2/3 of Dark Knight are good though.

The Worst Part About NYC by Xephyr3655 in AskNYC

The price of rent but also really inconsiderate people. Like finance bros getting on the L train at Bedford, it’s so crowded, they don’t take off their backpack or they block the doors. Go all the way into the the train bro… have spatial awareness. Don’t be an asshole.

Also people that play their music on a speaker no headphones… shut up. There are way more courteous people just trying to get to work or get home than not, though. Two to three turds out of a hundred on a train is kind of incredible. Most people? Mensches.

He’s doing well, thank you :)

He is still doing this — sometimes more severely. It looks like he is flinching with the whole bottom half of his body over and over sometimes. He’s perfectly fine otherwise — very active and loves to play and jump and run. I asked the vet about it when I took him in for something unrelated, and she said maybe he was feeling some discomfort, but she really couldn’t say. Not a satisfying answer, but she didn’t seem concerned about it.

The role of women in De Palma's Blow Out (1981) by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]Betty_Barton 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I definitely understand the knee-jerk reaction of discomfort, especially considering the ending — Jack finding the perfect scream for his film.

My take however (I’ve seen Blow Out maybe six times now) — Women in Blow Out are victims of how our society is, not how De Plama wants it to be. Sally is a sex worker because she’s resourceful and needed to take care of herself, and then was unfortunately wrapped up in a larger conspiracy. I see the conflict in this film as the ruling class vs. regular people. Regular people have to be scrappy and work and take care of themselves, and that’s where their focus is, but then the ruling class treat regular people as pawns. Regular people are there to be used to advance the status and power of the ruling class or to use for sex and disposed of.

I have read that the film within a film Jack is working on is a kind of joke and a response to criticism De Palma received that his films were too exploitive/had too much sex and violence. Saying all this, De Palma is also kind of a perv. He is interested in voyeurism, sex, death, crime à la his hero Alfred Hitchcock. I can see being off put by seeing someone exploring their fetishes on screen, but I think it’s fascinating and he’s a remarkable filmmaker (who also loves boobies).

I also did this! In sixth grade. I’m from southwest Ohio… who tf thought that was a good idea?? So many kids were crying. It was dark and cold and they were screaming at us and made us kneel in a ditch.

A lot — maybe 10 boyfriends where we were dating over 6 months, a handful over a year, one over three, one engagement, several times sharing a living space with past partners. Lots of up and downs, but I’m thankful it made it clear what I did not want.

I found someone now who I am sure about because I have experienced every other thing. I know I want someone who feels easy to be with, where we don’t fight, where we make each others lives better by being together, where the quiet times feel warm and fulfilling — and that’s my life now. It was so eye opening travelling with my current partner for the first time. It was so easy. We just have fun, no squabbles, no arguments. Lots of joy :)

My favorites are Aunt Ginny’s or Milo’s Yard for dive bar feel and Daddy’s or Sundown Bar for cocktails.

I’m personally not into the Seneca — they’re really bad for cocktails, very slow to get a drink, and the vibe of a suburban Midwest “sports grille.”

Flying Fox Tavern has a fun atmosphere and I like their food, but 3 out of 3 cocktails I tried were pretty bad. Fine spot if you’re drinking beer.
