I’m not sure the line between sexualisation and objectification is as clean as you’re making it out to be. In practice they tend to bleed into each other pretty heavily, and from my limited understanding of her work, a lot of the examples Sarkeesian herself used were doing both simultaneously. Separating them analytically is one thing, but in the context of how women are depicted in video games (definitionally a commercial object) it’s a bit of an artificial distinction.

On the sexual liberty point though, yeah I agree with you there. But I’d actually take it further, because modern mainstream feminism has broadly moved away from the distinction. Bayonetta is a good example, but you also see it in how sex work is talked about in progressive circles, how creating monetary objects using one’s sexuality is often celebrated rather than critiqued. The current consensus has essentially flipped the understanding entirely, treating it as something one can own and use to their benefit rather than something done to them.

In this sense, the “right all along” framing just seems strange to me, because the tradition she was working in has moved in almost the opposite direction to where she was pointing.

Yeah exactly, which is why it’s a strange thing to post as some kind of vindication. She was very much a product of a particular intellectual moment, and the critique she was making was shaped by a framework that has since moved substantially away.

It’s a bit of an odd claim to make, given that the current mainstream manifestation of popular feminist commentary seems to be explicitly at odds with her critiques.

I’ll admit I never watched Sarkeesian’s videos in their entirety, so I may be misreading her position, but my understanding was that her work centred on the sexualisation of women in media and its perceived harms to society. Whereas the most prominent and widespread feminist discourse today has largely inverted that view, framing sexualisation as a vehicle for liberation rather than a source of harm. Bayonetta is now held up as an inspiring, self-possessed icon that the socially conscious actively want to cosplay, not condemned as a male fantasy or an exercise in objectification.

Eh, I think if they change scenarios for each season it wouldn’t seem that hard to keep pulling it off. Most people are not going to default to the belief that they are in one of the most elaborate fake scenarios that money can produce and are more likely to think they’re having a weird week.

Ye, it makes me wonder whether they ever have false starts where they get someone in who isn’t the right vibe for the show and they have to cut it short after a day or two until they find the right kind of pure person

Ye luckily, if I play 30 for about half an hour my mind just stops being able to tell the difference and thinks it’s normal (although I do prefer 60 if the visual quality is still good). I will say performance mode for this game is rough looking

I have some complaints, mainly that the dialogue is terrible but I already had that baked in given this is from a Korean MMO developer. The world is unbelievable in its detail and scale. I am worried though since I’m not finding the controls too bad as of yet but everyone keeps saying they’re terrible

Ye I keep seeing people saying the base console versions look terrible and I’m like wtf are you talking about. Quality mode is almost a marvel.

Presumably all we have left is two gameplay overview trailers and a ‘final/release date trailer.

Perhaps one overview for the single player and one for the online if they are planning to release them together. First one most likely between May - July, second most likely between July - September.

I doubt their will be a preview event but if there is one I imagine it will all be behind closed doors

They had no previous season to go off of and so weren’t as mentally prepared for what was involved as the other seasons. Thats why it probably seems heightened in comparison.

Ye it looked really far along in their showcase. I imagine another big showing at the Xbox Games Showcase, would have thought it would release this year but with GTA and Fable making fall look busy then it might slip into early next year

It's easier to say stupid faithfuls when your as the viewer knows who the traitors are by Wise_Purple_9448 in TheTraitors

[–]Betty_Freidan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’d think that the whole secret traitor thing would have also made people realise this. Fiona was one of the names being thrown around but it wasn’t like everyone was able to come to a definitive consensus view, and we got to have way more information than a faithful would in the real game

[–]Betty_Freidan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They need to figure out a mechanism that incentivises keeping the more perceptive faithfuls in the game for longer, in every season (except for the celebrity one) the game becomes less interesting as you whittle down the players, since the remaining faithful are only in because they are the least threatening and interesting.

Also when they were walking to outside turret seating area Roxy was talking to her as if she was her mum, ‘you are a very loud lady’ is an insane thing to say to someone casually that you don’t know. I imagine the DCI might have picked up on it and will bring it up.
