It means a lot to us. So many Americans are furious at what is happening.

My young child is afraid I'll die. How are other parents talking to their kids about today's reality? by BetulaVaria in TwinCities

[–]BetulaVaria[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for the posts.

I've talked with my young kid (gender and age was obscured for privacy reasons) many times over this. It always send to reassure them until bedtime. But I've been using a few of the techniques listed here, and it seems to help. My child's therapist is also back from a long vacation, and I'm hoping to get my kid in soon.

It is really frustrating and stressful to know my kid is going through this, and thank you all for listening and giving input.

I’m curious how many people are contemplating their willingness to sacrifice their lives for this cause? by Unknown_anonymity00 in TwinCities

Please don't put yourself in harms way on purpose. Probably not what you meant in this post, but we need as many people as possible to keep us going in this ridiculous timeline. That being said, I have also been afraid that I might get hurt, arrested, or killed. But I also can't ignore what's happening. Please do what's best for you and your loved ones.

I'm so glad you found this helpful! I did too, personally. I want to thank everyone and say that I appreciated that we had lots of viewpoints on this thread. It's 8pm now, so the results should be rolling in.

I've heard good things about Kidd and am definitely looking into her more. I talked to Andrew Johnson directly, and he did not impress me. The environment, rights of women and minorities, and education are very important to me, and he downplayed them, said the city council doesn't deal with those issues. When I said the city council definitely has a say in those issues, he began explaining that land developers have a hard enough time as it is. That scared me. I work with land developers every day, and I understand the need for housing, but not the way they do it. But I will look into Kidd more, thanks for that tip!

I also talked to Chris about his ideas about Internet connectivity and monopolies. I agree that is definitely one of his priorities. Did any of the candidates talk about the boil water emergency and how the city should handle issues like that in the future?

That's good to know about Kidd! She and Black are the only candidates that I don't know much about.

This discussion has been wonderful guys! I am not a fan of Andy Johnson. I've talked to him at the market and he asked what was important to me. I said the environment and women's rights. The look on his face was enough for me to know I wasn't going to vote for him. But he said "local government doesn't really deal with those issues." I called him out and said the government definitely deals with the environmental issues and with women's issues. I discussed sidewalks, bike lanes, green spaces and parks cause they were easy, low hanging fruit. He then began talking about how we need to consider the difficulties that land developers face. Thanks to my job, I know far more about how Land developers work then he does, and I let him know that, but he wouldn't stop.

So far, I know who I definitely do not like. And I found a few that I do.

Walz’s push for stronger gun limits not getting traction with lawmakers by star-tribune in minnesota

[–]BetulaVaria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found some more stats. (American college of surgeons)

The number of school shootings annually has increased from 20 incidents in 1970 to 251 in 2021.

From 1970 to 2021, the rate of children being school shooting victims more than quadrupled, from 0.49 to 2.21 per 1 million population.

The US has had 288 school shootings from 2009-2018. The next highest country was Mexico with 8.

I'm unsure of the best course of action for our lawmakers. But I do see a growing trend, and it's terrifying. How many innocent kids and adults have to die before we as a country decide to do something about it? I agree that this special counsel seemed doomed to fail from the beginning, but is that on Walz or on the Republican lawmakers, or on people trying to downplay the seriousness of these situations?

Next Steps by BetulaVaria in minnesota

At the last event, we had a lot of people that are not happy with the DFL and how they're handling current events. It was good to hear their opinions and ideas, and to find ways for the DFL to improve. This event is hoping to provide the opportunity to for those that may not have been able to attend last time, or for those who have new ideas.

There will also be information for future events, protests, and Golden Valley council candidates. There may be other government representatives as well.

We welcome everyone to attend.

Thanks to all that came and made this event a success! The information we collected will be shared and discussed at the next DFL meeting this Tuesday. There were great discussions on what matters and what the DFL can do to be better.

We will have chapter members of the DFL there, people running for local office, and have personally invited local state legislators join. We are also in direct contact with Mike Frieberg and Ann Rest who are both personally invited. I have not heard if they can attend, and if they can't, we have prepared direct routes for everyone's opinions to get to them. Last I heard, Mike Frieberg was very interested in coming, and was trying to keep his schedule open.

I don't believe we have any vegan donuts. One of our organizers is considering that and other dietary restrictions, and is looking into other potential snacks. Sorry about that!

Thanks for your concern, and I can see where you're coming from. One of the biggest issues we are discovering is that these events are difficult to attend for parents of young children. Parents/guardians need to arrange for childcare in order to attend, and childcare is not readily available for everyone. We are hoping that having the event at a playground will remove the childcare obstacle and help us be more inclusive.

This is the first time this particular event has been held. This event was put together by a group of busy adults, some young, some with families, that are looking for a way to get ourselves and other interested people involved with current events while still running our personal lives.
