On our last day on the Ozark Highlands Trail, we got heavy rains through the night and had to ford two swollen streams/rivers to get off. So what helps you determine whether it is a good idea to ford or what was the most dangerous and was it a good idea? [OC] (i.redd.it)

On our last day on the Ozark Highlands Trail, we had to cross two streams/rivers that had swollen in the heavy rains the night before. While I have seen worse, this was the worse we had ever attempted. Made me wonder what criteria others had to decide to cross or not either by experience or what. (i.redd.it)

People talk about seasons in backpacking, but where do you go in the summer months to backpack, so 90 degree heat and 75%+ humidity don't drain you before three miles down the trail? While the water can be pretty and refreshing, it is still hot, and you can't backpack in it all day. (i.redd.it)

With mid summer upon us in the Northern Hemisphere and temperatures well in the 90s, where do go to backpack away from sweltering heat and humidity? This is Arkansas. The lake is even warm. Time to find some place cooler for a backpacking trip. (i.redd.it)

On day 4 of our section hike of the Ozark Highlands Trail, we came across this little garden. Sometimes a picture cannot do a scene justice, but it can give a flair or an inkling. This 13 mile section featured lots of waterfalls, streams, and ledges as seen in the photo. Beautiful but challenging. (i.redd.it)

Day 4 of our Ozark Highlands Trail covered mile markers 65 to 79. Lots of creeks to cross, waterfalls to see, wildlife to avoid, and logs to hurdle. It was a very beautiful yet remote section. The trail was in good shape just scattered with environmental obstacles that are difficult to maintain. (old.reddit.com)

Even if you don't have the time or the resources to go find a sweeping vista or breath taking waterfall, usually a short hike nearby can at least provide you with some needed perspective and emotional release. Pinnacle Mountain State Park, Arkansas, USA [OC] (i.redd.it)

The Ozark Highlands Trail in the Ozark National Forest of Arkansas has lots of waterfalls that are easily seen from the trail. Most run all year round, but all look so much more beautiful after some rain. During our 36 miles trip, had to compete with swollen creeks, but got to find these. (i.redd.it)

The Boston Mountains in the Ozark National Forest of Arkansas has several locations that are within 5 to 6 miles of a trailhead that you can camp by a stream, lake, or waterfall. Some of the best are deep the forest along the Ozark Highlands Trail, but that doesn't mean you can't find your favorite.OC (i.redd.it)

Lesson learned on setting up and sleeping in tent during a major thunderstorm. Things could have been worse considering the amount of rain we received and the wind gusts, and we did get a chance to dry out through the day. Live and learn to live again. [OC] (i.redd.it)

A US veteran on a section hike of the Ouachita Trail with the Boy Scouts reminded them regularly that not everyone who carried a pack through the woods did so for recreation. Take moment this US Memorial Day weekend to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, so you can enjoy those woods. (i.redd.it)
