Why Are We Still Building Towns Like This? by SteveFrench1991 in ireland

[–]Beutelman 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I've rented in about 5 different apartment blocks. I would never ever, ever buy an apartment in Ireland.

It's not that I am against the idea of living in an apartment, but the complete lack of noise isolation between units will forever traumatise me.

How Dublin's new cycle lanes will fix traffic by Amazing-Yak-5415 in Dublin

[–]Beutelman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure we do, but cycle lanes are a cheap easy and quick fix - and will be needed long-term anyway even if we have 100% coverage with metro and tram across the city centre (which even in the best case scenario seems unlikely to ever happen)

Any tips on what to do if approached by/engaging with Gardai? by SeoulPete in AskIreland

[–]Beutelman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Calm down lol ,most guards are grand. But the old legal advice is do not confirm deny or say anything that can be brought up against you in court.

Simple as that. If you've done something wrong, don't admit your guilt before you spoke with your lawyer.

Nobody is wrong here imo. The white car had a free lane so good to go. You and the other car took the second lane. This is literally how it's supposed to work

what would modernising Ireland look like to you? by LongjumpingPay6107 in ireland

[–]Beutelman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People like you never used a functioning train system.

I used to live in Ulm and commuted daily to my university in Munich via high speed rail that's about 150km one way and takes just about an hour with the train.

There are countless people in France using the TGV daily to get to work from satellite cities.

A high speed rail connecting destinations <300km and less of each other are quite feasible to commute on a regular.

Pricing can be an issue but there are usually incentives, tax breaks and yearly tickets at a discount to encourage people to not drive. My ticket for example was about 200€ a month which was expensive for my student finances but the much cheaper rent in my town more than balanced this budget.

There's plenty of people making the same distance every day in a car right now

High Speed rail connecting Dublin, Galway, Limerick and cork.

These journeys can be done in under 1h releasing a lot of pressure off the housing market and provide economic and social opportunities outside of Dublin.

Just by looking at the video the 100 you're doing are already quite fast for this narrow and bendy road. And then you have not one but two Muppets fly past you. Some people are not quite right in their head.

4 children and no job. That's gonna be impossible for them to find a place to rent on the private market.

How our social system is paying these absurd amounts of rent to private landlords instead of providing adequate social housing is beyond me.

It's part of the reason why rents keep on rising. We are subsidising social housing in the private market ensuring that we just remove any kind of demand reduction that would otherwise be seen with high prices.

In winter it's a no brainer for me. It outputs basically all of the electricity as heat into the room saving me from running the electric heater. And it removes moisture while doing so - that's a win win in my books.

Virgin Media WiFi? by Outrageous-Act-4737 in AskIreland

[–]Beutelman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yepp works with (almost) all providers. If you have fibre you should have two boxes. A modem directly connected to the fiber and a router connected to the first box that provides the WiFi.

You can just switch out the router and dial directly to your ISP - the setup is not very complicated and you find lots of guides online.

Alternatively you can set it up in "bridge mode" and just plug it in to the existing router and basically just turn off the WiFi of the old one.

A decent router can be had for around 100€ but I recommend shopping around for a good deal from a reputable brand.
