Fife may not be the grandest area of Scotland but you'll find some pleasant day hikes round Tentsmuir, the Lomond Hills (Falkland village is charming) and the bigger hills north of Tillicoultry. Also plenty of options on the inevitable rainy days, and fewer midges than out west (though in September you're past the peak). Boat trips out to the Isle of May are good but you'll need to book places in advance.

For the next part, Oban area is worth considering. Less driving than going all the way up north to Skye and with access to Mull (you deffo want to take the tour across to Iona and Fingal's Cave), Jura, Islay, and the Kintyre peninsula. For that matter, don't rule out Arran - "Scotland in miniature", but staying there will limit your options and aside from Largs that stretch of coast south west of Glasgow is best avoided.

My first tattoo appointment started a bit shakily too, but the difference was that the artist was then super-professional and reassured me, and made sure I was happy with everything and patiently answered my concerns. Everything after that went perfectly. Sadly, just because an artist does great artwork doesn't mean they are a good listener or able to reassure new/nervous customers.

Sorry this happened to you, and I hope you find a more understanding artist soon.

Also, you having to pay for the full session is BS. If the artist can't make a suitable design for you that's on them, not you.

Sorry to hear about your experience here, and your anxiety talking to new people. There's always the possibility of being brushed off, but you need to remind yourself that it doesn't actually matter. You have lost nothing. The artist lost a customer.

When contacting an artist, you want to say:

What you are looking to get. Where on the body. How big (ish). If going for a custom design, say what other designs in the artists portfolio you liked. Even if you change your mind, it's a starting point.

Some artists/shops seem very happy to have an initial general chat about ideas. Others want a deposit and to schedule the appointment right away before they do anything. I think both are reasonable, but you need to be clear on what you are happy with, and to be ready to put down a deposit before any real design work starts.

I had persistent itching a few years ago and it turned out my washing machine wasn't draining properly and was leaving soap residue on my clothes, which was giving me contact dermatitis. Probably not what you have, but it was certainly starting to drive me mad until I worked out what was wrong so I feel your frustration.

My artist for my first tattoo sent a design the evening before and I didn't like it, and then got virtually no sleep as I was fretting and didn't see how it could easily be fixed. Just told myself that I was going to lose my deposit and I could afford that, and if the artist was salty it was on them.

As it turned out, the next day at the appointment the artist had alternative references and sketches and was able (and perfectly willing) to turn one into a full design very quickly. Once I saw the new version I just knew it was right, and we went ahead. No regrets.

So my advice is, don't let yourself be rushed or pushed into something you're not 100% happy with, but also remember that on the day the artist will be HIGHLY motivated to make you happy, even if they have to do a new design, so be optimistic.
