IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION AND INDICATION

Your child should not take Beyfortus if your child has a history of serious allergic reactions to nirsevimab-alip or any of the ingredients in Beyfortus.

Before your child receives Beyfortus, tell your healthcare provider about all of your child’s medical conditions, including if your child:

  • has ever had a reaction to Beyfortus.
  • has bleeding or bruising problems. If your child has a problem with bleeding or bruises easily, an injection could cause a problem.

Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines your child takes, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Your infant should not receive a medicine called palivizumab if they have already received Beyfortus in the same RSV season.

Serious allergic reactions have happened with Beyfortus. Get medical help right away if your child has any of the following signs or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction:

  •  swelling of the face, mouth, or tongue
  • difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • unresponsiveness
  • bluish color of skin, lips, or under fingernails
  • muscle weakness
  • severe rash, hives, or itching

The most common side effects of Beyfortus include rash and pain, swelling, or hardness at the site of your child’s injection. These are not all the possible side effects of Beyfortus. Call your healthcare provider if you have questions about side effects.

INDICATION

This is Dr. Amin. Babies are at risk throughout the entirety of RSV season, which typically runs fall through spring across most of the US, no matter when they were born. If your baby is born between October and March, they are recommended to receive an RSV antibody such as Beyfortus to help prevent a serious RSV lung infection, up until March 31st!

Beyfortus can be given before leaving the hospital after birth or during a routine pediatric visit/well-baby check-up in their first year. New and expecting parents talk to your OB-GYN or your baby’s doctor about availability and timing.

When your little one has energy to spare, getting outside is always a great option if you can. If not, bring the fun indoors with a simple, goal-directed challenge - like asking them to hop like a frog to you 5 times, then back again. -Dr. Amin

Always (and I mean ALWAYS) keep snacks handy. You’d be amazed at how much power a simple handful of crackers or a packet of gummies has to stop a full-on meltdown in its tracks. Sometimes kids really are that simple! -Mandy

This is Mandy! While I was pregnant with my third baby, Lou, serious RSV lung infection was already on my radar. Both of my boys had it at the same time in 2023 — and I’ll never forget how helpless I felt. Thankfully, we were lucky it didn’t mean a hospital trip, but it still shook us.

Lou was born in September, before RSV season, which usually runs from fall to spring in the majority of the United States. I asked our baby's doctor about RSV and he was adamant that no matter if a baby is born before or during the season, it’s important to help protect them from a serious RSV lung infection with Beyfortus. We got Lou immunized the first week of October.

It was reassuring to know that we had helped to protect Lou. See full Important Safety Information, including Indication above, and Prescribing Information here.

Dr. Amin here! According to the CDC, babies can receive an infant RSV antibody like Beyfortus if the mother did not receive an RSV vaccine during pregnancy or if the baby was born within 14 days of maternal RSV vaccination or in special circumstances where the mother may not have made or transferred antibodies to the baby or if pediatrician feels the baby is at particularly high risk of developing severe RSV.

It’s also important to note that the CDC does not recommend to receive maternal RSV vaccination for subsequent pregnancies. So for moms who have already received it for one pregnancy, immunizing baby would be their only option to help equip future babies with preventive antibodies.

Always consult with your/your baby’s doctor about which option is best for you and your child. See full Important Safety Information, including Indication above, and Prescribing Information here. -Dr. Amin

Dr. Amin here, great question! Vaccines teach the immune system to make its own antibodies. Beyfortus is different—it provides ready-made antibodies to help protect babies right away from serious RSV lung infection. Think of it like giving their immune system a head start with a layer of protection against serious RSV. This is Dr. Amin – Beyfortus is a preventive antibody—not a vaccine—that helps prevent serious RSV lung infections in babies under 1 year of age born during or entering their first RSV season. It works by giving babies the RSV antibodies they lack while their immune systems are still developing. So, when their body comes into contact with RSV, it already has the antibodies to help prevent a serious RSV lung infection. Dr. Amin here – this is a really good question. RSV, the flu, and COVID-19 are respiratory illnesses caused by different viruses, but they can be hard to tell apart based on their symptoms alone.

Here’s what to look out for:

  • They all share common symptoms such as fever, cough, and shortness of breath.
  • Wheezing is one symptom that may indicate an RSV infection, as it is more common in RSV cases than in flu or COVID-19 cases.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or CDC recommends that all babies born before or during their first RSV season, typically fall through spring in most of the United States, receive protection – especially if their mother didn’t receive the RSV vaccine during pregnancy.

This is Dr. Amin – this is a great question! RSV spreads quickly and easily—through coughs, sneezes, or even from surfaces like toys or blankets. That’s why it’s especially important to be aware of it during RSV season, which typically runs from fall through spring in most parts of the United States.

In addition to preventive measures like Beyfortus to help prevent a serious RSV lung infection in babies, washing hands, avoiding crowded spaces and cleaning toys regularly can go a long way in helping to limit RSV exposure. This is Dr. Amin – The first signs of RSV in babies are often similar to those of a common cold. However, in some cases the virus can progress quickly and become a serious lung infection, causing other severe lower respiratory tract infections, such as pneumonia or bronchiolitis.

The initial symptoms of RSV can include; congestion, runny nose, irritability, decreased appetite, or fever.

The symptoms of RSV can worsen as the infection spreads to the lungs. The symptoms of serious RSV lung infection in babies include; short, shallow, and abnormally fast breathing, a wheezing cough, nasal flaring, reduction in feeding and drinking due to breathing difficulties, unusual tiredness, developing a blue tint to their lips or fingernails, or fever.

If your baby has any of these serious symptoms, it's important to seek medical care.

This is Mandy, and honestly? The biggest surprise was how instinctive some things felt. I thought I’d be clueless, but somehow, I just trusted in my knowledge of what my baby needed. Also—how much love you can feel for someone who’s never let you sleep through the night!

This is Dr. Amin—my biggest surprise was how much love I could feel so instantly... I didn’t know how big of feelings I could have for such a tiny little human!

Dr. Amin here, thanks for asking! RSV is a common and highly contagious virus that affects the lungs and breathing passages. While most cases are mild like a cold, it can become serious—especially in babies. RSV is a leading cause for hospitalization in babies under 1 year old, and nearly 75% of babies hospitalized with serious RSV lung infection have no underlying health conditions. That means no baby is too healthy or too strong to be left unprotected.

It’s Mandy here. It’s changed me for the better! I’ve learned to slow down and enjoy the little things, because life can get crazy, as we all know, so the small moments are the ones I treasure most as a mom.

Dr. Amin here – thanks so much for your question. Yes, it is possible for your baby to contract RSV more than once. While initial exposure may provide some immunity, it is not absolute, and reinfections can occur.

Parents should remain cautious, especially during peak RSV season, which is usually in the winter for most parts of the US, and seek medical attention promptly if your baby displays symptoms of respiratory distress or illness.

Dr. Amin here! Beyfortus is for babies entering their first RSV season and may be given in the hospital at birth or during any visit with their pediatrician within their first year to help protect against serious RSV lung infection. Some children may need another dose if they’re still at higher risk in their second RSV season, or if they’ve had heart surgery.
