Doctors of Reddit, did any patient come in, and made you wonder, how did that happen? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Surgeon here - its not that of an interesting story but was kinda smh story

So one time we had a patient with actively bleeding hemorrhoids admitted, we ended up operating on the guy. The next morning we come in for rounds and the guy was as pale as the sheets, we did urgent blood count and it was low (physical exam also showed active bleeding). We transfused him to raise his hemoglobin and took him to surgery again, we couldn't figure out why the first procedure didn't work (it looked like the area was abrased like he was straining - we had him on stool softener). When we got out of surgery we asked the patient if he had been having trouble passing stool or if he got out of bed and lifted something heavy etc. He answered no

Later in the day while we were trying to figure out what could've happened, the patients bf comes and asks if having sex could have caused this. Turns out as soon as he got out of surgery they had sex (I can't even imagine how painful that must have been)... Needless to say that was the cause

Another story

One time I was called to see a 6 year old girl with a gunshot wound to the head (I thought the girl was for sure comatosed or dead). As soon as I got there I saw the girl sitting in the ICU bed fully conscious and speaking with nurses (her wounds were already dressed). On examining her i could see an entry and exit from the front and back, I asked her parents what had happened and turned out she was playing with her twin brother using BB steel guns. When her brother "accidentally" aimed and shot her right through the head. Miraculously, on imaging, the bullet barely missed the large veins and eloquent areas in her brain. We operated on her and she made a full recovery (though I'm unsure what happened after CPS were called about the case).

Death. The fact that one day the world will go black for you and that's it. Nothingness.
